I can't tell a difference in bullets of comparable quality. The big plus for bevel base is the ease of loading on progressive machines.

Though the plain base bullet is supposed to be more accurate, I've often achieved better groups with the bevel base. I load both, chosing which more on ogive shape than base shape.

I have had excellent results with both. Quality is the key.

I have some of those magma machines. I cast both styles with them and have never noticed a difficulty with plain base.

Some folks seem to have a strong prefence for one over the other but I have loaded and shot both and frankly I didn't even notice any diffence in how they load. A properly flared case will accept a flat base bullet just fine. Too much flare or too little are not good.

primer,
Welcome to the forum.

I cast both as well and have had no perceptible difference in accuracy.

The only place I have noticed any difference at all is in leading. If the bullet is too hard I have noticed more leading from my bevel based bullets when I push them hard.

My 44mag bullets work well up to 1800fps with no gas check and have a plain base.

If the bullet is soft enough to "slug up" or obturate, the base is of little consequence.

I too have noticed little difference betweeen FB & BB in .38, .44, or .45. I do read and respect the writters published in HANDLOADER who seem to recomend FB, principally because of more latitude in size and hardness.

Given the choice of molds, I'll take the plain base over the bevel base. Why? Because withe bevel base, I get a little bit of lube on the bottom of the bullet that I have to wipe off. The plain base doesn't have that problem. Remember, I'm using a Lyman sizer, not a Star.

I have been told that if I use a stiffer lube, I won't have a lube ring with the BB, but haven't tried it.

Chuck,
I have this problem with some of the sizing dies I have too. One that I have has a concave ground into the bottom plunger. This takes care of the lube problem you describe. Fortunately it is in the only caliber I have a BB mold in!
