I am new to reloading. I am using a Lyman 55 powder drop, throwing Bullseye for .45 acp rounds.
My question is-I can't get it to throw consistent charges. One throw will be 5.0 grains, the next might be less then 3.0. I am using the same # of knocker drops, am using the same motion in using the drop. What am I doing wrong? |

I have used a 55 for years with no problem with Bullseye. Now Unique is another story all together.
You may have a bridging problem. That is where you are trying to use the "deep part" of the slide and the powder makes a bridge before falling down into the cavity. Here is what I do for Unique. I close the bottom part of the slide all the way and only use the top part. You will get consistant charges doing that the only problem is that you are limited to the weight of the charge. Hey guys
thanks for the info. I took my 55 apart and cleaned it, then re adjusted the slides. It is making consistent drops now. |

That is Good News!!!!!
I have a #55 and it can drop some really consistent charges. Using the fine slide only (and closing the coarse slide) is the secret when doing pistol charges. I double check every five drops when doing pistol and it is always ±0.1-grains. I just finished doing a bunch of 9mm charged with 8.0-gr of AA7 from my #55 measure. A few were 7.9 but none went above 8.0. NRA Member, Regular Army 1985-1993, Deputy Sheriff 1982-1985 "We conclude that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms.
