Has anyone been able to reload the 9MM 147grJHP to 1000FPS? Speer No.12 lists 5.8grs of Bluedot as achieving that mark in a 4" 5906. Hard for me to believe. Alliant list 6.2grs of Bluedot hitting 1050fps but is most likely a test barrel. I have been able to reach 969fps in a 5" Berreta 92 with the 6.2gr of Bluedot. I did not correct that figure back to the muzzle but figure the chrono was at least 10 feet away. I'm open to suggestions on a full power load for the Speer 147JHPGD or the Remington 147JHP. I have put together a nice Colt 9MM conversion. At 48 ounces it just would love to fire some screaming loads. It shows great potential for accuracy with reloads. If you have some good data I'm interested. Bruce

I've not hit 1000 fps with reloads, but then I use Bullseye. I see Buffalo Bore gets over 1100 fps:
**********************
3. Item 24C/20 (+p+) 147gr. Speer Uni Core

Browning Hi Power MK111, 4.6 inch barrel----------1179 fps
Beretta 92F, 4.9 inch barrel------------------------------1131 fps
Glock 19, 4.0 inch barrel---------------------------------1165 fps

**************************

but I have not a clue what powder they use. If you get any data, please share it.

I don't reload for the 9x19, so I have no useful powder suggestions, I'm afraid. I can tell you that Speer Gold Dot 147s break 1k fps in several of my pistols.

Powders that should work well in this application would be Accurate #5 and #7, Alliant Unique and Power Pistol, Hodgdon Universal, HS-6 and HS-7, and Vihta Vuori N330, N340, N350 and 3N37. I'm pretty sure Ramshot Silhouette and True Blue would also work, but I've never used them personally.

Just my 2¢ and as always, your mileage may vary...

VV 3N37 will just crack the 1000 fps velocity but it is max. VV 3N38 is listed as pushing 1170 at the starting load and up to 1200 with max load. I use 3N37 for 9mm regularly but have no experience with 3N38.

Thanks for the replies so far. I've just started my research into more possibilities. AA#7 appears to have potential as well as Powerpistol.I don't have much data to check on the VihtaVuori powders. Anyone have a link to some downloadable data for that powder? I have not looked at the new Speer #14 yet. Maybe it's time for a new manual. If Buffalo Bore and Speer can crank up the velocity safely then maybe I can too. As has been mentioned Bluedot can give erratic velocities. The same BD load which gave me 969fps also gave me 909fps and 936fps. I would like to at least make 1000fps but If 1100fps is safely possible with available powders then that's great. I notice the data for AA#7 sets the AOL at 1.095". That by itself may be one reason they get 1047fps. I've been using 1.130"Aol from the Speer manual.Bruce

RidgwayCO, Thank you for the link. Now that is some potential! Maybe even better than I expected. I'm reviewing the data and it all looks good. I hope some of this powder is available locally. This forum a great place! Thanks. Bruce
Interesting that the top powder for velocity 3N38 has the same burn rate as Bluedot.

Well, Here is some "old age" going on! I posted on another forum about using the 147gr Ranier bullet and 5.5gr of Power Pistol. I too was looking for a load that would get about what you want.

The Alliant website lists 5.7gr as maximum with a 147gr XTP for 1095fps. Knowing what I do about the Hornady bullets I felt that the 5.5gr would get me in the ball park. It was way back in January when I was working on this load and I said I would chronograph it after the weather warmed up, it was 15F at the time! Well it is a little warmer than that now and tomorrow I will be in the neighborhood of an outdoor range. Maybe I'll have to drop by!

I like the idea of having 19 rounds in one loading with a 147gr bullet going 1000fps! (P226 Sig!)

If I remember, I'll try to find those bullets again, I'll let you know. Don't be afraid to email me if I don't get back to you soon! Big Grin

Thanks Skip, I would like to see your results. I won't have to E-mail ya. I'll just say Bluedot three times and you'll show up. Big Grin
I'm still going through data to figure out what I want to try.I need to figure out someplace to do my chrono work as my buddy who had the private range membership passed in 2004. I will see what Speer #14 says maybe tommorrow. If I can just get a consistant 1000fps+ that will work for me too. I used to run 115gr at 1300fps but that was hard on the 639 frame. Thanks for all the information so far. I'm still hoping someone has already found the perfect powder and will tell us the recipe. I see there are a few contenders but I would rather not buy more powder than I need too. Bruce

I've used 3N38 in 147gr Win JHP and 165gr GD/40S&W; it takes things up a notch. I made about 1180fps with cushion, so 1200fps is doable in a G17; recoil is noticable.

In .40, Beretta 96 chronoed about 1315fps no pressure signs; extractor signs on Steyr M40-A1, very reduced muzzle blast.

IMO, just stick with 147s at about 1000 fps. Easy to achieve with many loads listed in several manuals.

Remember that even if the pressures are within CIP/SAAMI limits, the load with a 147 gr bullet @ 1180 fps has about 25% more recoil impulse than a normal load.

More recoil impulse = faster slide velocity = more battering to the gun = parts breakage and shorter serviceable life. And of course more recoil.

I don't see what can 150-200 fps more will do to the bad guy, the bullets are optimized to perform at about 1000 fps... Expansion is going to be the same, probably a couple of inches more of penetration (but penetration probably was 14"+ to start with), and 1180 fps is still too low to penetrate metal plates better. Depending on the bullet's construction you could get fragmentation and erratic behaviour with increased velocity.

I agree that the difference between 1k fps and 1.2k fps is probably not much use in this round - velocity gets you distance for hunting, but that's really not an issue with my 9x19s. Smiler

None of the factory rounds that claim 1000 fps delivered that in my pistols. Most ran 915-925 with slight variation. The HydraShok at 925 delivered advertised gelatin performance at that speed.

IIRC, 4.3 gr of Unique and a 147 Zero got me right at 900 fps with excellent accuracy and actually expanded. This was extrapolated load data at the time. I didn't have a heck of a lot of interest in the loading-other than to note that the HydraShoks printed exactly where my night sights were.
