Thanks Skip.I don't believe I've ever even looked at Herco so I will cross it off the list. Here's the whole deal in a nutshell. Powder must give consistant velocity in the 9MM with the 147JHP. Since I load a lot of other calibers it must be universal. Sounds like Unique huh. Must replace Bluedot in .357 158JHP, .30 carbine pistol, .357 158LSWC rifle. Unique doesn't do it all well. Bluedot is chunky and sometimes is erratic. AA#7 and AA#9 seem to fall real close to this burn range. I have data for AA#7. I still have not looked at the new Speer #14. Even Midway has them on backorder. Hopefully there is some new data for the 147JHP. I have ordered some Ranier 147JHP and I hope they are as good as their other bullets. In the mean time I'm preparing cases and checking data. BTW for any of you who may have Colt's in 9MM the Kimber Mags are better than the Spingfield mags, if you use reloads which have flat pointed or TC bullets. The feed angle is higher so it aligns with the bore much better. The Kimber mag is also easier to load cartridges into. Very smooth indeed. If all you shoot is Winchester white box then the Springfield mag is ok. Just my opinion. I've ordered two more of the Kimber mags. Bruce

The 30 carbine is giving me a problem in making one powder fit all of these cartridges. I went to Alliant's website and looked at the other cartridges. Our own NKJ_nut likes Green Dot in 9mm loads, mostly lead though. At any rate there is data for all of the cartridges you want to reload using it except the 30 carbine.
The Accurate Arms powders are great, I use them a lot. You have to know what velocity you are shooting for though and use the right powder. Light loads on slower powders don't work with them, don't ask how I know, and I haven't gone to the other end of that thought line with any of them! If it were me I would choose 2 powders. One for the hot stuff, AA#9 most likely (WC820 MILSURP for me) and one for the light stuff, either Bullseye or AA#2. I could safely load every cartridge I hand load for with those two (3) powders. different bullets react to loads differently.
9mm case will withstand lots of pressure here is a pic of a winchester 9mm casing fired out of battery in a mac. number of shooters shoot whats called 9mm major which is 9mm pushing bullets to 160+ power factor. brianenos forums have info on it. I personally use a firearm that was built for 40sw then converted to 9mm the Steyr M9 which prefers +p ammo. I have used a S&W Sigma 9ve with no ill affects the sigma's were built in 40sw first as well. both 4" barrels. plated bullets should be loaded like lead cant crimp them like jacketed or most JHP's. Speer GDHP and some of their bullets are plated. for JHP's in 9mm I would recommend Golden Sabers if they will feed and function in your gun. XTP= Xtreme Terminal Penetration not a good winter JHP will clog and fail to expand like many cheap JHP's will ie winchester white box and silvertip JHP's. some JHP's when pushed fast will shed apart the expansion partitions biggest problem I experienced that with was golddots. will expand more when pushed and can penetrate less atleast my experience in 40sw. has to expand though clogged might as well be using FMJ. 9mm just seemed to expand or crush well but didnt expand like when I tested 40sw. 9mm just didnt have the lead though the 147gr have a good amount my favorite was the 124 and 147gr golden sabers. dont recall my data used to send them having trouble accessing original posting I made and cant find text backup of data. 124gr bullets were most likely Vv N340 1200-1250fps 147gr bullets most likely max load of PowerPistol nearly 1100fps power pistol powder at night |

MrApathy, You have done some testing to be sure. I wish you could find your data. I remember when I used to test bullets. Never did take any pictures. What was your test medium? Inquiring minds would like to know. I appreciate the information. The pictures speak for themselves as far as expansion goes. A good comparison of bullet types and weights. Thanks Bruce

I ran some of my normal 147gr loads over the chronograph today. It is the maximum load of AA#5 out of my Sig P226. It is a modest 900fps but this is using standard data. I'll have to look up the +P data and see what max is for it.
One thing nice about the Accurate powder line. If you need more velocity USUALLY all you have to do is go to the next higher number powder, if applicable. From what I am seeing on their data website AA#7 is a viable option for the 9mm 147gr bullet. It also will easily get you in the velocity area that you are after.

It's been noted earlier but bears repeating:if you drive bullets faster than their design envelope, penetration suffers. Frequently, so does bullet integrity, although this can be a trade-off if penetration remains adequate (think Nosler partition).
Example: Federal 9BP (now C9CP) and 9BPLE (+P+). The hot version delivers astounding expansion but penetration suffers in comparison to the standard velocity version. Not to pick on Federal, everyones ammo behaves in similar manner. |

not everyone. it is possible to find a balance but its will take a good amount of research and testing.

Good afternoon. I see the good information just keeps comming. Thank you for the water jug info MrApathy I know how draining such testing can be. Bad joke day. Anyway I remember doing some of the same. I finally made a four foot long box with masonite panels and either wet sawdust or phone books for test media. I never did catch any 158LSWC as they always passed through. The hollow point .357 seemed to go 12". The .223 55gr HP ammo would go in a few inches and disintegrate. That's all I remember from my testing days.
I received an order of the Ranier 147gr JHP and as usual their quality is great. I purchased these to practice with at about 900fps. I figure 4grs of Unique should put me there. I'm still debating which powder to use with the 1000fps load. AA7,Power Pistol and 3N37 are on the list. I took a photo of some of my ammo after I saw the 147gr raniers. From left to right Ranier .45 200swc, Ranier .45 185FP, Ranier 9MM 147grhp, Remington 9MM 147jhp, and Hornady 124gr encapsulated fp. I will order the Ranier 124gr when I run out of the Hornady bullets. I also received my new rear sight for the conversion. Last time out the sight was self adjusting, the screw was too short and the detent was worn. What could be better than lots of bullets and new things to test. Bruce |

Yes it's a Remington. Haven't seen them in a boattail even though I pulled one that appears to be from a .357 Sig load.I've been buying these locally for a few years. I actually believe they came from Midway and the shop just stocks them. Bruce |
