I'd appreciate suggestions on really SOFT loads for 9mm. I have a VERY recoil shy spouse that I'm trying to move from a .32 to 9mm.
thanks, |

Welcome to the forum dd!
This is one of the most knowledgeable reloading forums on the web, bar none! Now, I have a question for you. What firearm are you going to be shooting these out of? Personally I don't like the "snappiness" of the lighter bullets in this caliber. I like heavy ones going under 1000fps to be honest. I am posting a load on another thread here on this forum with my load in it. You could easily use a few grains less powder and have a "38spl type" load. What powders do you have available in your area? What bullets do you have available locally? Those two factors could limit your selection too. Waiting to help! I don't load 9mm, but I can only think of one problem with mousefart 9mm loads... cycling. My guess is that these will be shot in a semi-auto, right? Just be wary that a super-light load may not cycle the slide properly and cause feeding problems. There are 2 rememdies for that: go to a stronger loading or change out your recoil springs.
I ran into this when I wanted to do some majorly reduced loads in my .40 cal. Word of advice... don't run off 100+ rounds of a load you haven't tested yet!! 3.2 grains of Bullseye and a 125 grain cast bullet.

3.6 gr. Titegroup under 124 gr. plated or jacketed bullet. I used this load for plates at one point and became league's laughing stock. People were saying they could SEE my bullets in flight. I switched to a heavier load - it's ashame to loose a shoot because your bullet took too long to get to the target.

musicmanbass is right you have to watch cycling.
i use 3.5 gr win231 for my beretta 92 but i must use at least 4 gr in my glock or the glock does not cycle.i would pick your gun and just work down the load thanks warney |

Wow! Thanks for the quick response fellas. I sure don't see that on other forums.
I should have given better data in my original post. Correct, it is an auto, the Walther PPS (distributed by S&W). My last attempt was 147gr fmj with 3.19 Titegroup. These cycle fine. The reason I'm attempting light loads in the auto is that I had great luck getting her comfortable with my S&W 637 J frame using a light 38spc cowboy load (105gr / 4.1 TrailBoss). Thanks |

Sgt Preston here. I find that steel or stainless steel guns have considerably less recoil than plastic framed guns. I have S&W 539 with a 4.5" barrel. I shoot 124 grain flat point 9mm rounds. I load 4.2 grains of Win 231. It is a fairly mild load & it fully cycles the gun. I could shoot these all day long if I had the time & could afford it. I'm at work today & don't recall my overall length or crimp diameter, but I'll revise my post tonight or tomorrow morning to add the additional specs. Hope this helps. Sgt Preston USMC LLA
Here is the rest of my 9mm load data. My bullets are 124 grain Berry's copper plated flat points. I use 4.2 grain of Win 231. I crimp these to .378 / .379 dia. The overall length is 1.090. They ALL feed & fire & cycle the gun. They don't group quite as well as 45ACP's out of my PC-945. But then a 539 isn't a 945 & I can shoot the 539 very respectifully. ddbowen, Headknocker is correct, I gave you specs for 9 x 19 Luger (Parabellum) rounds. You did list 9mm in your initial post. What ammo are you currently buying? Preston

Headknocker, I think the OP has it correct. The Walther PPS is a 9mm, while the famous PPK is, as you know, the 380acp offering. If the women don't find you handsome...., They should at least find you handy. |
