I use the 250 grain Keith SWC in my 3.5 inch barrel model 24. I am getting ready to order some powder from Powder Valley that I've never tried before. Of the 4 powders below, which one would you guys suggest as the most accurate all-around. I'm looking to velocities in the 800 to 900 FPS range.

Thanks

SR4756
AA #5
Universal Clays or Universal. (Don't know the difference)
Trail Boss

Can't help you with your choices. I've used Unique for years and can't find a reason to change.

I load 10.5 gr of SR 4756 in .44 Mag brass with a 240 gr LSWC (it's a Lyman 429421). It could be reduced some for .44 Special brass.

Universal and Universal Clays is the same powder.

Lots of folk brag on Trailboss in .44 Special, but I haven't shot enough of it to say one way or the other.

AA#5 is probably a ball powder which would improve metering, if that's also an issue.

I have some Universal that I don't use for anything. I don't find it to be all that clean burning.

If you want those velocities, SR4756 doesn't show new data for those speeds. New data for SR4756 was is the mid 700-fps range with an 8.0" barrel. Maybe an old load manual does.

Frankly, I'm not sure what powder will safely get you 800-900 fps from a 3.5" barrel. Some of the guys will be along with some loads from the past that will do what you want!

I know Accurate #5 MAX for a 240-gr LSWC from a 7.7" barrel = 864 fps.

Skeeter's load of 7.5gr Unique behind that bullet will get you there. With Speer brass I get 950 at 15 ft from the muzzle with it in mine. With WW or R-P brass it's right about 900.

Unique works well, or HP38 (231) if you want something that measures a little more precisely in a progressive press.

I don't care for Universal.

My favorite is SR-4756. Much cleaner than Unique, more uniformly metering, too. I load about 8gr. under a 262gr. Thompson GC for about 935fps.

I've used Unique for 30+ years now, but am branching out! I had some leftover Alliant Promo powder, and load 5 grains of it with a 215 cast lead for 44 specials. Nice load, and the powder is CHEAP compared to others. Powder Valley sells it.

Never tried those four. Have successfully used Unique and W231 for years in Mod 629 MG and Mod 627 and 686 and have found what works in my guns. Variety is the spice of life.

In my 4" 624:

IMR Trail Boss for 220 - 260 grain cast practice loads

For 240 - 260WFN-PB cast business loads:
VV N-330 or better yet N-340

Alliant Power Pistol gives VG results w/ the 260WFN-PB. Accurate & plenty of power.

For some reason, I've never gotten "write home" results, in my 624 w/ Unique.

For the 44 Special cartridge, Universal and Unique use the same loadings and give the same pressures, so just use your Universal powder and the 7.5 grain load given for Unique and you will be fine.

I use 4.0 gr of Clays under a 240 gr Berry's PHP bullet. It gives me just over 700 fps & is a nice plinking/practice load.

I am also a big fan of IMR's 4756. Very versitile powder, meters well in my Dillon press & is clean burning.

Universal and Universal Clays is the same powder. It is one I have tried and really didn't care for.

I have never used #5 in .44 spl.

I am not a huge fan of trail boss in any caliber I have tried it in including 44 spl.

4756 is a good powder and you will get decent results in .44 spl.

My all time favorite powder for .44 spl is Herco. 7.5 grs with a 240 to 250 gr. cast bullet is the load to beat.
