The local PD is using the .45 GAP and every so often there's a lot of their brass laying around on one of the ranges. I was shooting my 625 and got to wondering...would these work in the moon clips in a 625? I imagine that eventually lead or copper would start to build up on that headspacing shelf in the cylinder and cause some problems, but I'm just guessing. What do you more experienced folks think.

And, no. I left it lay. Got enough ACP brass. Just curious.

Should work just fine, a lot of the 10mm shooters also use the 40 S&W in their 610's. As you say, the cleaning of the chambers could get to be a problem, but a good chamber brush, or a brush for a 475 or 50 caliber gun should be able to get the chambers clean.

I just read today that you can't cut down acp brass to make gap, because there are rim and groove differences.

IMO it should not be any different than shooting 38 Specials in a 357, 44 Specials in a 44 Mag or 45 Schofields in a 45 Colt as long as the moon clips are used. Not suggested for an older 1917 as the 45 GAP is loaded to what are considered +P 45 ACP pressures.

Reloading should use 45 GAP specific data as powder space is smaller. Also you would want to clean the cylinder thoroughly before using 45 ACP or AR loads for the reason you mentioned.

My reading indicated that the main difference is in brass thickness in the pressure ring area. If the 45 GAP cases will fit moon clips then I would not foresee a problem in a revolver with using the 45 GAP cases.

I have also seen that 40 S&W cases should not be made by shortening 10mm cases. As one member noted though 40 S&W ammo works fine in the 10mm S&W revolvers though when used in moon clips.

With the rimmed cratridges you mention there is no need to use moonclips.

Scrap brass prices are over $1.00 a pound where I live. I don't leave anything on the ground when I leave the range.

TSQUARED, maybe I'm misreading your post. The comment referred to the need to clean cylinder charge holes when shooting shorter than designed for rounds. Shooting the GAP in an ACP chamber has the same issues as a .38 Spl in a .357. If I've misunderstood your intent, sorry about that. Don

Would the moon clips hold the smaller, rebated rim of the GAP round?

Big bang, much smash'em.

Me neither, I have even started picking up 22 when there's time. I think I might be up to 10 - 15 pounds of scrap right now.

44forever,
"Would the moon clips hold the smaller, rebated rim of the GAP round?"

Yes. I tried a few that I'd dropped in my pocket and they do snap in, but not with the authority that the ACP's do.

I would pick up the .45 GAP, save until I had "enough" then trade them for the proper cases. .45 ACP cases are probably easier to come by than .45 GAP's. So, you might even get a premium in a trade for the proper cases.

I see nothing gained by trying to use an improper case in your piece and much to lose...
