Is someone talking about SR4756 here? I’ll just have to chime in…

Good point, Jes, about availability of the reloaded ammo. I wonder how did we not think about it before.

Did some calculations lately and I think was able to estimate pressure of various SR4756 loads based on velocities. Here come my trademark charts; data is based on Remington 158 gr. SJHP bullet in 38 special cases.

IF you believe these charts, pressure of 8.0 – 8.5 gr. SR4756 loads is quite high for 38 special guns. There is a plenty of room to play though with somewhat reduced charges in 38 spl and a whole lot of room to play in 357 magnum.

Just one thing to point out, remember the criteria for being considered "THE LOAD". 158GR (+/-) LSWC, minimum Speer #8 loading using SR4756 for the propellant, in 38spl cases.

Mike,

Using Skip's criteria of a lead bullet, IMR said 6.0 gr with a 158 gr LSWC produced 1000 fps at 15,850 psi. They used a .3575" bullet seated .315".

I agree with both of you guys. All my data was collected for jacketed - not lead - Remington bullets. It is very likely that pressure for lead loads (including THE LOAD) will be different - lower.

I don't know how much lower the pressure of lead loads is. Speer generally shows about 0.5 gr. difference in powder charge between lead and jacketed bullets. So I'd expect that pressure of the THE LOAD would fall around 35,000 psi.

Still since this thread is about all SR4756 loads, I thought my pressure calculations would be of interest to others.

Mike

Well Mike, it was interesting, but we were just trying to clarify what "The Load" would consist of. Smiler
