I've been watching this thread for a while to see if more chronograph results were posted. I know that when I chronographed 230gr Speer Gold Dots with 6grs of Unique I was getting 895-901fps.This was in a SW745. 230 FMJ were clocking at 864fps with 6grs of Unique. As a cross check I looked at Pet Loads by Ken Waters. His max load of 7grs Unique with 230FMJ delivered 904 fps. Just proves all guns are different. Since 6grs already exceeds factory loads 825fps for Winchester 230FMJ, I'm very comfortable at that load level. It's interesting to see that it's possible to go higher. I'm sure the pressure is at plus-p levels. Apparently the guns are tough enough to take it.Bruce

Paul5388,
I use 255 Keith(Lyman #454424)hardcast SWC,my alloy on the Brinell scale is around 21,not much worries of leading and excellent penetration and creates a full caliber wound channel.I've never tried loading the 255 swc in the Acp case, the Autorim case to me seems to have a little more case capacity. Most of my bullet casting supplies come from wheelweights with a addition of tin,I get about the same performance from these slugs that I do from LBT or Oregon Trail HC slugs which both companies produce excellent HC slugs.

I have trouble keeping up with where I post information, so at the risk of repetition, I'll make these comments.

I use a 50/50 clip on wheel weight to stick on wheel weight alloy and I add a little chilled shot. I don't seem to have any problems with leading, but I try to size large. My 358429s are sized at .359" and I size at .452" for use in the M625. One of these days, I'll get out the hardness tester and see what the BHN actually is.

I use ACP brass because of moon clips in the M625. If it's a hotter load than what I want for the 1911s, I use .45 Super brass, just for the different head stamp.

According to this site http://lasc.us/CastBulletNotes.htm the BHN of the alloy I use should be around 10-11. That's very similar to Elmer's 16 to 1 alloy, which performed well for him with the same type of loads that I use (well DUH, I use a lot of Elmer's loads).

Here's what can happen with bullets that are too hard.

The keyholes were Oregon Trails 158 gr LSWC shot out of a Handi rifle at 25 yards. The bullet is so hard and evidently undersized, that it didn't properly engrave on the shallow rifling, which didn't allow enough rotational spin to stabilize the bullet.

You can bet that it was that the bullets were too small 'cause I KNOW they had enough velocity! Big Grin

Paul,
How does the .45 super work in your 625?I'll have to give that a try cause i hate toting the hks speedloaders with my heavy weight autorim loads,I like the conveinance of my moon clips for fast reloads, how does your taper crimp work on your 255 SWCs loads,do you have a enough bullet pull with the taper crimp vrs. a roll crimp for your heavy loads,do you have any case bulging with the 255s in the .45 super with bullets sized .452?

Equalizer,

The .45 Super is identical to .45 ACP, it's just designed to hold more pressure. I could very easily use ACP brass, and have in the past, but I don't want to take a chance of mixing revolver loads with 1911 loads.

The .452" bullet is just a.001" or so larger than the throats on my M625-6, but may be .002"-.003" larger than the throats on my M625-4. Regardless, it shoots well in both.

For non-serious social work, I use RIMZ moon clips, but I use steel moons for serious business.

If the bell/flare is held to a minimum, there is plenty of bullet pull with the taper crimp I have on my Lee .45 AR dies. I only flare enough to ensure I don't shave lead in the seating process. The only difference between AR dies and ACP dies is the shell holder.

I believe the .45 Super is rated at 28,000 psi and the longer .45 Rowland is rated at 40,000 cup. The M625 can be used with .45 Super without any work being done, but a Rowland conversion has to be done to lengthen the chambers for it to fit (see Clark Custom guns for details).

Santos,
What kind of velocity are you getting out of that load? SKIP USMC 1973-1979

Skip - I'll have to go from memory on this one, but I believe the vel was 910.

Paul,
thanks for the info on the .45 super brass,I was thinking it was .001 or 2 longer, but after you posted this I realized I had been overlooking the case length, thanks for the heads up,Are you using Starline cases in the .45 Super or another brand?About the .460Rowland, have a friend who has a 1911 converted to it with the kit from Clarks,he also has Wesson Arms 460 Rowland revolver, extremely potent round right up there with the .44 mag.

Starline is the only brass being made that I'm aware of. I have shot a 230 gr Golden Saber at 1140 fps with just standard ACP brass, so I don't know that the extra strength is actually needed.

I need to break out the chrony and do some more work on some of these loads to see what a heavier bullet will do. Wink
