Any one used 44 Russian in the 44 mags before.
I have a 3 inch trail boss, and the ejector is 2.5 inch. I want to be able to speed load the 629 faster.
Tell me what y'all think.

If you have a supply of 44 russian, why not.I'll caution you about one thing:The shorter russian case will have more pressure with the same powder charge,if used with data for the longer case.If you do not have 44 russian data, drop well below 44 special data.

I had a couple of hundred .44 Russian cases given to me some time ago. When I tried to load them, I discovered that the crimp die was too long to crimp the cases. I could have cut the die off, but I decided that it wasn't worth the candle.

I've never tried them in a .44mag but do shoot them out of a .44spl. Lee makes dies for the Russian round.

It will be the same thing as far as shooting any special out of a magnum gun. You will develop a carbon ring that will need to be cleaned completely BEFORE using the other cartridges. If you don't you will have pressure spikes because of the restricted chamber.

Use magnum cases, and a fast burning powder for a light load and the cases will fall out if you allow gravity to help in the reload. I'll try to get a video of how I do it in competition. I use magnum cases so the cylinder stays cleaner and have never had a problem getting timed reloads done.

Why do you want to reload faster?

The Hornady .44 Mag./.44 Spl. dies work well to reload .44 Russian to include crimping. The only die that needs modifying is the belling die which is too long for the .44 Russian. It's no big deal to grind the bottom off as far as the threads using an angle grinder, and finish it off with a hand file. The .44 Russian case will then go into the die far enough to get belled. You can still use the die for .44 Mag. and .44 Spl.belling.As far as loads are concerned I use Unique for all three simply reducing the load down by one grain from .44 Mag.through to the .44 Russian. The .44 Mag.loads for Unique are in any loading manual.I suggest this advice only for modern revolvers built to fire the .44 Remington Magnum case. The accuracy of all three lengths is quite astounding, and the .44 Russian is such a pleasure to shoot.I would heed the advice of smith crazy with respect to the carbon rings.
