Okay, I've finally decided that I really need a chronograph. Two of my major functional requirements are that I need to have the readout on the bench with me and that I can download the data to my PC. I'd also like to have a decent sized memory on the unit, too, but I doubt I'd need more than 100 round memory.

I've seen the CED Millenium, PACT Pro, and the Shooting Crony Gamma.

Any recommendations?

How much money do you have and how much are you going to use it?

For my personal use in checking changes to handloads, I bought a PACT.

If I were going to use one a lot, like chrono checks at competitions or major load development, I'd go with one of Ken Oehler's.

Dont go cheap spend the money and buy the 35P by Oehler you will be happier in the long run

First you need a good gun then you need a good load
then it becomes a matter of
how you attach yourself to it

I'd buy an Oehler if Oehler still made chronographs. the 35P was my first choice, but I can't find one. Cost isn't an overriding factor. I'd rather buy something that lasts and has a decent interface, rather than spend my time trying to figure out directions translated from Chinese.

I was thinking about CED with Shooting Chrony Gamma Master as a second choice. Anybody have experince with either of these?

I used an Oehler 35 for about three years in my job in a ballistic lab. It was a great chronograph.

In my private life, I have used the CED Millennium, and more recently have switched to the new M2 Millennium. These are also very good chronographs that seem to have no issues that I can see. They are extremely good at picking up readings under all sorts of lighting conditions, and are also better at not getting spurious readings than the 35P.

If Oehler were still making the 35P, I'd probably go with the CED M2 anyway. It's less money and, with it's USB cable, interfaces seamlessly with the PC.

My advice is don't shoot the damned thing!

And, if a stranger at the range wants to borrow it or shoot through it, get his cash up front to pay for a new one should he blast it to smitherens.

I bought a PACT Model 1 XP recently and it's worked flawlessly. It runs ~$130. I don't know if it has everything you want on it.

The PACT Pro XP Chrono System is probably what you are looking for. That one will run you ~$230.

I have a very old Oehler, the club has an old PACT, and I have shot over several other makes. None were troube free, so I bought a CED. It was no improvement - I think they are all doing about all you can do with consumer grade equipment - UNTIL I added the IR illuminators, with battery pack for remote operation. That made all the difference in the world, I don't think I have had a missed or unbelievable reading since.

I use a Crony Beta. Not as many bells & whistles but for less than $150 (when I bought it)it does everything I need. Readout at the bench, capable of downloading to a PC Good memory. And when you "accidently" let a stray one lightly clip it, the company will take the remains in on trade in. Yes, I found out by just "lightly" touching it with a 240 gr .44 mag at 1400 fps. My excuse was the wind blew at the wrong time! Seriously, the Crony is extreamly accurate and reliable.

I have an early PACT Professional, and have been very pleased with it. Lots of features for the money. I've been thinking of upgrading to their new, improved model.

I have a Chrony Beta Master and it does everything I have needed for the past couple of years. I have had no problems with it and for $125 I felt it was a good deal.

I shot my first one Frowner - a PACT - the first time I used it! I replaced it with another PACT X1, but this time with the IR feature, which really helps give consistant readings in all light conditions. It also allows you to flip the little devil upside down so it rests on the skyscreen reflectors - that way your sights don't block the sensors and you'll be less likely to shoot them Wink

My thought is, "Go Cheap !" ... Also a detached computer/LCD from the sensor portion .... It is not "IF", it is "When" you shoot the unit, it will be cheaper to replace the busted part. The Shooting Chrony Alpha Master cost me $35 to replace the sensor unit & new sun sc reen/posts were included.

Am another one with one of the in-expensive Chrony, only a Beta master. This has a digital read out on a cord, very handy. Am on my 3rd chrono, having shot the first two. Prefer the ones without the memory or statistics calculator. This seems to keep the concentration the actual accuracy/av velocity of the load, not some statiscally questionable sd number.
