I am new to loading .38spl cartridges, using 158gr Semi Wadcutter by Missouri Bullet Co bullets .358 in diameter.
I deprime/resize, slightly expand, and press new bullets into cases with a Lee Challenge press, using Lee Carbide dies. I have to clean the wax/lead shavings off each newly loaded cartridge before firing. This is getting tiresome!
Is there anything I can do to reduce the cases shaving lead as they are begin loaded?

I do not notice any hard resistance when loading the bullets, they seem to go right in.

I agree with the above advice.

Also, if you are using new cases did you deburr tha case mouths before loading?

Don't sweat de-burring; it is really unlikely that this is your problem - odds are good that you just need to expand your cases more. Smiler

Shot-placement is king. Adequate penetration is queen. Everything else is angels dancing on the heads of pins.

Look into the Lyman M-Dies. They are specifically made for lead bullets. If you go to their website, I believe they show what's involved.

But, even with the M-Dies, I get lubricant coming of HBWC bullets and gumming everything up every 60 rounds or so.

I loaded some after readjusting my expanding die, took a couple of tries but I'm loading smoother now, only a little lube coming out every now and then. I was scared to expand to much. Thanks for the info!

Also, bullets that have a slight chamfer on the base OD seem to work better than flat base ones.

These are the bullets I am using, they have a little chamfer at the base, they are a lot smoother now! I guess you have to ask to learn.

Look like great bullets. Make sure you ocassionally minitor your OAL for changes. Bullet lube tends to collect on your seater plug and will cause the OAL to decrease and push the bullet deeper in the case. Generally you have to take the seater [an/or crimp] die competely apart and soak in solvent to get the lube off. Then you have to re-set/adjust the die for the correct seat depth again. I always save one round in my parts box to use as a gage to re-set the seater plug; marking the bullet weight on the case.

As an alternative to tlen's suggestion, stick a q-tip with some Hoppe's on it up inside the die at the end of every loading session (or when you think of it Smiler ). It will relieve your die of some crud.
