Just picked up a M629-1 with 4 inch barrel today. It looks like this, with the presentation box under it.
I know, it's not a good picture, but some of us are camera illiterate. Here's a better picture, maybe. While I was taking these new pictures, I decided to go ahead and load a few rounds to shoot tomorrow. 11.0 gr of SR 4756 with a Lyman 429421 and Rem 2 1/2 LP primer should get me a little over 1000 fps and that should be plenty for anything I'm going to do. Does the wife know you steel her good bath towels to put your dirty guns on just to take pictures?
That my friend is a nice firearm! (drool, drool)(must not covet, must not covet Can't wait to hear how that baby shoots! 11gr of SR4756 huh. Yeah, I need to hear about that load. Skip,
A little JPW helps just about any gun. It actually came with Hogues, but since I had a set of proper era wood grips not being used, I thought I would see what it looked like originally. 11.0 gr of SR 4756 was an easy choice, since it's what I already had the powder measure set for. That's the load I've been using in .357 with 358429s lately. |

Even with Hogues on them they don't fit my "paws" the best! (excuse the manicure)
The powder measure being set at one point is a blessing! I did the same thing with the 2400 to SR4756 loads with my 45AR loads. Not the same weight, but the same volume. What I noticed was though is this, I got more velocity with the lighter amount of SR4756 than with the heavier 2400. Now, physics being what it is, that should mean less recoil with the lighter loads if they were at the same velocity. At any rate, run some across the chronograph and lets see a target too! Skip,
I'm getting too old to worry too much about chronograph readings and sit down target results. I have a hard time coordinating my wibble with my wobble, but that's what I have to be concerned with more than anything else. However, I'll try to comply with your request at some point. The load I'm using is from the "unmentionable manual" and it's the start load. If it's anywhere close to actual numbers, which Speer #8 tends to be, this load is generating 570 ft lbs of energy with the 257 gr (in my alloy) bullet. It shoots pretty easy with the factory wood, so I'll probably leave the wood on it. I did slug the throats and got .4318", which isn't unusual for early 629s. My bullets are sized at .4315", so they don't have to bump up much. |

Paul,
You are so humble. I know the real reason. You just don't want to show us young pups up is all. Thanks for being so kind! No humility Skip, just a statement of fact. I have so many focals on my glasses, they look like venetian blinds!

The latest incarnation looks like this.
I suppose the Grippers anchor my hand better than factory wood does, because it's shooting better for me now. The loaded rounds are 11.0 gr of SR 4756 with Lyman 429421 bullets cast with 50/50 wheel weight alloy. I shot about 1/2 of a box and didn't get any noticeable leading. |

I was having trouble today!
The larger holes (full wadcutters) actually have tape over them, but even so, the SWC holes circled in red are distinguishable. It's about 2.0" at 25 yards, which is plenty good enough the way I wibble wobble around. |

Paul, my newfound load is 9.0 grains of Universal under that 429421 and a standard primer. Giving my 1065 out of my 6 inch barrel. I found the 4756 load last night, but don't have any more bullets right now to try it out. Tried using Trail Boss for a "working load" but it was a bust.

2" @ 25yrds from a seasoned citizen, why that is remarkable in my book! Close to superhuman!
Thanks for the report on the SR4756 load. I am making some 44mag for hunting this year. My H&G #503 over 21.3gr AA#9 for my Handi-Rifle and 5" M629 Classic. I've found the full underlug of the Classic models helps a lot with recoil and full power loads. These should be about 1800fps from the 22" Handi-Rifle and about 1300fps from the handgun. I'll run them sometime this week and start another thread. Kind of a bump to the hunting season that will soon be upon us! Skip,
When I calculate the actual MV, I come up with 1071 fps with a ME of 655 ft lbs. That's sufficient for anything in my part of the world. |

Can you give me an idea what you paid for it? I'm going to sell my 8 3/8 soon. Thanks |

M45,
You probably don't want to sell yours for what I paid for this one. I got the wooden presentation box and all of the original paperwork, but it came with aftermarket grips/stocks. Let me just say, the whole deal was less than $600. |
