.....a container of AA#9 and tell me if it has a strong acrid odor to it. I have a lb of it that I have been loading .44 Mags with, and this stuff has a very strong smell. Does this powder usually smell like this, or did I buy a batch that has gone bad?

Thanks,
WG840

That's normal. A very strong bouquet, just a hint of acetone, with a redolence of nitrates. Whets the old appetite. Readies the pallete, and what have you.

Powder has two distinct odors, one is okay, what I call a nitro smell, the other is an acid like smell and will often be dusty and sometimes even have a redish color when you pour it out.
If it doubt, call AA and ask about the odor.

Thanks folks.

Joni,
I put a call in to AA, and I got some recorded message about "one day at a time", and something about 12 steps. Smiler Actually, I left a message for them to call me back (the Accurate Arms folks that is). I should hear back from them tomorrow.

Thanks again all.

Speaking of smell, many years ago when I ran gunshoots on a missile ship where I was the weapons officer, firing off the beam with the 5"/54 rapid fire would fill the bridge with a cloud of strong smelling gunsmoke. Always good when the beast did its thing!! Don Big Grin

That must have been a sight! Big Grin

We only had 5"/38s and 6"/47s and a Talos launcher.

These were a little noisier than a 5". Smiler
