I don't know anything about adding scopes to handguns, so I have a couple of dumb questions (DQs) about a scoped M29-3 I'm thinking about bidding on. It's an AZL s/n, so I'm guessing it's 1988, or thereabouts.
Here's a picture. (Picture deleted.) I've seen several M29s with similar mounting arrangements, so I guess it's pretty common. The seller says two holes are drilled (and tapped) through the top strap. He also has the original rear sight (but not the leaf screw). I would remove the scope and reinstall the rear sight. DQ #1 - Will the two holes that were drilled through the top-strap be covered by the rear sight base? DQ #2 - Would I need to "plug" those holes with a short allen screw (or something)? DQ #3 - Is there any concern about the strength of the top-strap with the extra holes in it? DQ #4 - Or, should I just forget this gun and find a non-scoped M29 in its original configuration? OK, guys, tear me a new one. I'm all ears! This message has been edited. Last edited by: skeezix, Lorin |

Sir - The old style S&W sight bases would cover the drilled holes completely after installing. You do not need to plug the holes. As far as whether the top strap is weakened, I would say anytime you drill extra holes, you have weakened the original strength. However, this has been done on thousands of guns, without any negative effect. If you really like the gun, I say buy it. If you do not need or want a scope, I would buy an original M29 & be all set to go.

skeezix,
Considering that S&W began the factory drilling and tapping of many models, I don't think there's a problem. Of course, you know your needs better than anyone. If you think your eyesight may be going downhill like many of us 60 and over guys, this one might be just what you want. You'd have the holes already there....could use a scope, red dot, whatever you want. If not, the stock rear sight would cover the holes. If the gun is in good shape, and considering your needs, it might be a go. By the way, I saw Roy Jinks shooting (I assume it was his personal handgun) his scoped 29-2 on the History Channel not too long ago. So, if it works for him, you shouldn't have to worry. |
