625-8
* first trip back to S&W it was stiff extraction issue with the cylinder
- that was fixed.
* at the same time I had them do a Master
Revolver Action Job. It is very smooth but
after installation of Guy Hogue full size/profile in ROsewood, the screw on the main
spring backed off a little bit. So, I had my
gun dealer/smith take a look and he tightend it
back up. He had done the same thing to my 686P
after I got another Guy Hogue Compact size grip
on the 686P, and it was definitely the same thing single action was very weak. He had

So, I've had 7-8 primer dud hits - they're sitting up on a shelf. Various brands and types of loads .45 ACP/full moon clips. Sigh.
We ordered up a full strength main spring from
WOlf - he installed and test fired and 2 of 6
were Duds. He'sputting the original main spring back in - I asked about the Cylinder & SLide longer firing pin - he said he didtn't have a press to install it. He Recommended
sending it in to S&W.

Should I get the CYl. & Slide extra length
firing pin and send it along with the gun to
S&W ???

I can't think of anything else for symptoms in trouble shooting it except it also happend
but not as often with .45 Auto RIm cartridges.

C&S extended firing pin is .015" longer that factory. Take off side plate, remove straight pin (comes out easy) with needle nose pliers, slide old one out slide in new one, replace pin and side plate. 5 minutes tops! The extended firing pin didn't really help much (S&W will tell you that also). It comes down to hammer kinetic energy (velocity). How about a skeletonized hammer or a Titanium one?
Federal primers are a must after action job reduces DA pull to 7 pound range (using Wolffe reduced power mainspring and the 13# rebound spring that comes with the mainspring). SA igniton no problems (hammer starts back further). Please note to get down to 7 pounds, the internals must be slicked up. After polishing the internals and putting in the new springs, you will probably have to screw the mainspring screw all the way in for 100% igniton evev with Fed primers - then back off 1/4 turn and see if you still get 100%.

I purchased three C&S extended firing pins from Brownells. They would'nt fit (Too large in diameter} Brownells sent replacements and they were the same. Finally had to turn them down on the lathe.

How much over were they? I can't remember what they should be - I don't have any loose ones at this time.

I dont remember what the measurements were as it was last year. You might want to try Randy Lees competition firing pins at apextactical.com.They work for me in my competition revo.

1 - Me thinks my smith 1) knows his limitations which is a Good Thing(TM).
I'll print off the first response instructions
2 - Swami - I see a purchase of Federal
primers in your near future, 2,000 ( .45
ACP & .45 Auto Rim ) Large & 500 ( .357 Mag )
small magnum, and 500 small pistol (.400 corBon).

Thanks for the info. and source/options.

You don't need a press to swap out your firing pin. Look in the FAQ, I put a diagram and information in there. To change the firing pin will take you 3 minutes to do, from grips off to back on.

Very typical. It's also very typical for the C&S pins to break unexpectedly.

i have a thunder ranch 45 acp revolver i had trouble with misfires.i changed the spring but did not help, changed the firing pin to c&s pin,did not help.so i did some measuring of the mainspring strain screw and found it did not screw in as far as it should.i turned in a small lathe the under side of the screw head a few thousands of an inch so the screw would go in deeper.now the gun works every time.ronnie

If you order a C&S extended firing pin, a S&W standard mainspring and a mainspring strain screw from Brownell's, you should be covered.

I have put the C&S firing pins in several guns and they went in with no problems and work fine.

The C&S firing pins I received were too large in diameter too. By my measurement they were .003" larger in diameter than the S&W pins.

I polished the body down with 600 then 1200 grit sandpaper with the pin nose mounted in Dreml's smallest Dreml tool collet which gripped them perfectly.

These were a recent buy so apparently the current batch are oversized slightly.

Are the stocks hard to put on the gun? The screw I mean, I think you need to put another set of stocks on it and give it a try. I put the longer firing pin in all of mine. Best $15 buck I ever spend. Have Fun - John
