Shot a speed steel today....along in the 3rd stage, got a light primer strike. 4th stage, several more. 5th stage got nearly 1 per cylinder full. 6th nearly 2 per.

All new primers, three different loads (still doing load development). WSP, Remmies, Federal premiums. No palpable or visible anomaly in seating depth.

After match, took all light strikes (8 total) to line and fired them all except 2.

Got home, compared seating depth to factory new and old old reloads kept for comparison. No primer height anomalies.

Stock factory PC springs. Took grips off, strain screw was "not loose" or back out. Did turn it with mild-moderate effort nearly one full turn.

Won't have chance to fire it again till next week.

Opinions/comments/observations/similar tales of woe somehow overcome by diligence and a pure heart?

The mainspring strain screw nearly one full turn from tight is enough to cause your ignition failures.

I was experiencing the exact same problem with my 627 Pro. I pulled the factory strain screw and found it had been peened. What really confused me was the inconsistency in the primer strikes. Some had a barely visible dimple while others had normal looking strikes. I replaced the strain screw and cleaned the firing pin and firing pin channel. So far no fail to fires.

Funny thing though, when I finally thought I had it fixed I went to the range with a co-worker who has a 5" PC 627 he's had for years. He experienced a super light strike like I'd been having. He said it was the first time it had failed. We were shooting Speer 145 TMJ, although I'd had the same problems with R-P 158gr SWCs also.

If you discover anything please let us know. I'm not totally convinced the .010 difference in strain screw was what made the difference.

For a super light DA pull you need to be shooting Federal Primed ammo. Reloads or any factory Federal and you should have no FTFs.

Once you have the action set to your standard put some loc tite on the strain screw so it doesn't back out.

You will never find a gunsmith or a factory employee tell you to ever back out a strain screw. They are designed to be tight. If you must tinker with it, file the end of the screw flat and put it back in tight.

Thanks for the ideas gents. I am going camping for week and will not be back at the range for another 10 days from now with the 627.

I can not use Federal primers as my Dillon 650 does not like them much.

Jumping to the 610, I hope to be able to return to the decreased DA pull with the Wolff rib spring, as that was so nice.
