I have a Blued Mdl 586 that I was using some Lil'Gun powder with and now have some carbon spots on the cylinder. What is the best method of removal without damaging the bluing?

Forget about methods and materials that will make stainless cylinders "SHINE LIKE NEW". Anything harsh enough to remove powder fouling and metal discolouration is harsh enough to remove SOME of the bluing too.
Powder solvent, bristle brush, and elbow grease is all you want to use. |

The lead remover cloth should work without stripping the bluing, as long as you don't go too crazy with it. They don't generally harm original bluing, but will take off cold blue touch up spots. Good check on a used gun to see if the bluing is original.

Get a jar big enought to put the cylinder in and cover with hoppies over night. Should wipe off. Don't use one of the cloth's, it will take the bluing off in a heart beat.

I use a nylon brush on the cylinder face with a hoppes. The burns don't show on a blue gun.
Anything agressive with polish the face and in time change the cylinder air gap. NRA Benefactor Member |

Mike,
I looked at the cloth and it mentions the cylinder face only. The spots are actually on the cylinder. Is it safe to use without damaging the highly polished surface? |
