I just purchased a 29-3 from a gun shop that I trust. It's in really good condition, with some cylinder drag. Problem is, it's got a rattle coming from low under the sideplate. Almost like a tiny ball bearing loose in there. Whatever is moving around in there seems to move more front to back than side to side. The action is smooth, though I have not fired the gun (want to figure this out first). I'm no gunsmith and don't pretend to be so I've done no more than take off the grips. Anybody have any idea what this might be? Thanks for your time.

Its a normal sound, the hammer block rattles some if you shake your gun side to side, sometime you can hear it. nothing to worry about. I had a m-19 years ago , heard the same thing sent it in and thats the reply smith gave me. You should be fine.

I don't do grease, but a drop of grease to the inside of the side plate will kill the rattle.

It's a normal sound...

If the rattle is more pronounced front to back, it's the trigger stop, a small rod inside the trigger return spring. Not a problem and can't be heard when the gun fires. Quit shakin' and start shootin'!

Thanks for your help. I just had a gentleman who knows (and works on)Smiths look at my 29 and he came to the same conclusion, no problem at all. Thanks again, now I can get to shooting.
