I think you mean the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Missouri.

IIRC, the Radford Arsenal has not produced ammo in quite a long time, though it is not impossible that it be reopened. Hell, anything is doable if you pump enough $ into it.

Radford never ceased production-or at least it didn't according to the ATK website. ATK operates both Lake City and Radford.

Radford did scale back some and is offering certain services to other than government use-like precision instrument calibration.

I stand corrected. Learn something new every day. Wink

Be wary of claims from people in gun stores or at gun shows. Was this guy a VP at Federal or something? If Federal posts it on their web page, then I'll believe it.

Radford AAP makes no small arms ammunition. They do make much of Alliant's gunpowder there.

The only AAP still making small arms (.223/7.62mm/9mm/.45/.50BMG/20mm/25mm) is Lake City AAP outside Kansas City, Mo.

However, Remington, ATK, IMI and Black Hills all have contracts to provide ammo to the military. I'm not certain about Olin, as they ran Lake City AAP prior to ATK taking over and lost the contract for poor QC IIRC.

I work in a gun shop so I understand my position is no better than that of the guy at a gun show . I'll pass it on anyway Wink

We are a direct ATK ammo acct through our buying group NBS . I didn't save the ATK email/memo , but what it said was that ATK was no longer accepting (NEW) orders for 223 ball ammo . Not ammo in general . Are prices still going up ? Yes . But , they are Not ceasing civilian ammo sales .

My assumption/opinion is that between military demands and countless millions of rounds on backorder from their commercial & LE distributors as well as small direct accts like us , they decided they are deep enough in the hole and probably are unable to fill the next year's worth of backorders . No reason to accept orders for more 223 they can't ship .

Here's what the Google Translator says:

The weapons are needed
But nobody knows when;
So no, if breathing strolling,
And especially at night,
You bring so
That when you leave, quit cutting.

Clear as mud, eh? Smiler

With pleasure.

Weapons are necessary
But nobody knows when;
So therefore, if you go for a stroll,
And even more so at night
You should always carry them thus
So that when drawn, they draw blood.

Martin Fierro is an Argentinian poem about a Gaucho (cowboy) of the same name. It is a rather long poem. More like a book written as a poem. In his time, the common concealed weapon was the knife, particularly among Gauchos. So that should give you some context.

Martin Fierro

BTW, internet translators suck. I did not do a strictly literal translation (impossible to do with poetry) but since I am fluent in Spanish (it is actually my native tongue) you can take my version to the bank. Wink

Cousin of mine's a retired Olin tech rep and still does consulting work for ammo manufacturers. Most of this is his observations and opinion.

Bottom line: War reserves are depleted. What's being manufactured is shipped downrange and little is being stockpiled. The DoD is anticipation a gradual wind down of Iraq and Afghanistan combat operations and is gearing up to replenish lost stockpiles.

Add to that the fact that Israel is stockpiling huge amounts of ammo in anticipation of further combat operations into Lebanon and elsewhere has cut down the amount of ammo we're buying from them, which is mostly shipped here for training.

Cousin Geoff said that he's surprised we're seeing any ball ammo and that most of what you're probably going to see is factory second stuff rejected by the DoD.

Thats what I have been seeing.

I have been buying Softpoints mainly the past few months because I can get them for the same price as 55 grain FMJ. I prefer a good bonded softpoint verse a FMJ round myself.

I am glad I reload and have 10,000 cases and a few 1000 primers ready. I need to get more primers while I can.
