There were allegedly (per Federal) a couple of design changes to the 9mm loads. Since I couldn't see any visible difference in the hollow cavity, I assumed that the change was in the lead alloy. Briefly, the difference resulted in either minimal expansion or quite acceptable expansion.

Unless Federal would be willing to ID the production dates on your lot numbers, the only way to figure out which is which is by testing. I found accuracy and reliability to be excellent.

I flat love the Nyclad Chiefs Special load (standard pressure 125 gr hollowpoint) and am hoping someone brings out a reasonable replacement. Speer's admitted it's a good idea, doubt it will ever be produced.

I have a box of std. pressure 125 gr. HP .38 spl. Nyclads and shot one into Perma Gel. I'll post the results if anyone is interested.

Don't carry a gun because of what may happen today. Carry because once, just once, and at the least likely time imaginable, you may run into the worst monster you ever could imagine. I don't have a digital camera, but it wouldn't matter. The bullet exited the side of the block after taking a curved path for 15 1/2". It was fired through four layers of denim from a 3" model 60. It was found laying on the floor of my top-secret ballistic testing laboratory, retained all it's weight and expanded to .412". It looked like a leg from a pair of bell bottom blue jeans, or a blue trumpet. I would not trust that load to expand against heavy clothing from a 2" barrel. Of note; this was a Federal brand Nyclad.

The penetration gets better the heavier the clothing gets. 2 layers of denim would get about 12" penetration. Expansion to .42-.46 caliber is about all you're gonna get from that load. There's two ways to look at this: 1) for standard pressure loads from a 2", it's good. 2) it sucks. Take your pick, just remember to put the round someplace vital.

I'll take wadcutters, the FBI load (Rem, or B Bore), or someone's hotrod Gold Dot out of a 2" barrel, but yes, it beats a .22. Out of a 3" or 4" it's a winner.

I'm not sure if this will help determine which version of the 9mm Nyclad you have, but on my 4 remaining boxes (which should be the same batch as the ones I sent you) there appears to be a date code of March, 1994 on the end flaps. Nyclads were discontinued just a few years later, so if there were multiple versions of the 9mm bullet over the 20 years or so that Federal made the Nyclad round, yours may very well be the latest version.

Here's how I look at it: Nyclad ammo has excellent expansion when the bullet encounters little or no clothing, and excellent penetration if it must first punch through heavy clothing to reach the target. I'd love to have both great penetration AND great expansion, but this is still outstanding performance for a standard-pressure .38 Special. That performance, combined with the light recoil and quick recovery between shots, makes the standard-pressure Nyclad hollowpoint my favorite carry ammo.

I have one 50 round box of 9mm Nyclad 124 gr HP left. Use to carry this load in a Sig P228 and a Kahr K9 Elite 98. Have been using Cor-Bon +P 9mms for the last 8 years.

Gary, have you had a chance to try out the 9mm Nyclad yet? I always assumed the 124gr standard-pressure 9mm would perform like the 125gr standard-pressure .38--around 850+ fps out of a 2" barrel--but this weekend I read that the 9mm load was measured at over 1100 fps out a 940! Eeker That's impressive performance, and should give you nearly 70% greater muzzle energy than the .38. Velocity should be even higher from your 547, so it looks like you found a great carry round for both your 9mm revolvers!

By the way, I wish I had access to a chronograph to test those Nyclad wadcutters. I'd be interested to see how fast (or slow!) they come out of a 342 or 642.

Never saw 115gr 9mm Nyclads. The 124gr was rated as the best standard pressure 9mm load in the Marshall/Sanow reports based on actual shootings.

So was the 125gr 'Chiefs Special' .38 special loading.

I haven't used 9mm Nyclad ammo but have used .38 Special and .38 Special +P Nyclad ammo. I think Federal Nyclad ammo is the most accurate ammo I've ever shot.

Illinois law reads that any pistol bullet with a nyclad-type (or other) coating is armor-piercing (A cop-killer bullet) and therefore banned.

The fact this is pure bull shows how easily our ignorant lawmakers are deceived.
