I have a older box of Remington Golden Saber .45 230gr. I just got a 4516-1 and didn't have any Federal HS 230gr. around so I loaded this up in it. When I got around to shooting the 4516 yesterday I had three FTE. I was shooting 230gr FMJ and then some Federal HS 230gr. I looked at the chamber and feed ramp of the barrel and noticed some ruff marks on the right side of the ramp. The chamber had a peen on the top edge. I didn't notice this when I bought the 4516. Could the sharp little wings in the bullets caused this?? Should I use a lighter bullet in the 4516 due to the barrel length. I haven't shoot the 4516 yet after I cleaned up the ramp and chamber. Wanted to see what you guys thought.
Thanks!!! _____________________________________________________________ The happiest place is not Disney World....It is the Range!! |

The school of thought, is a .45 acp shorter than 4 or 4.5 inches needs to drop to the 200 or 185 grain. The original 1911 .45 acp was engineered around a 5" barrel for maximum development. I'm not sure, in the clutch, it would make a whole lot of difference. If somebody is shooten at me, I'm not gonna hang around to ask what length of barrel the guy has. He is gonna get my southern exposure as I head north bound; at least up until the point I'm behind some significant cover. I doubt a perp could tell the differnece between a 185 or 230 grn .45.

Ditto. I always shoot 185 gr. in my Springfield Armory 4" and 200 gr. if low-moderate power LSWC's.

I only use the 230gr JHPs in full size guns. For the compact 45s, I go with either 200gr or 185gr rounds. May want to try some of the Cor-Bon Powerball loads in your gun. Feeds like FMJ but expands like JHP.
