Has anyone chronographed Federal's 130 grain JHP .357 ammo? They bill it as Personal Protection ammo, whatever that may mean. Marketing term, but also I think it may not give really deep penetration on angling shots. It may be designed for frontal shots on humans.

What were the results? Any gelatin trials?

Has anyone shot anything living with it, like a coyote or a big ground hog? Wild pigs?

Thanks,

If this is the stuff I'm thinking of, it really moves out. I chrono'd it from a short SP-101 years ago . . . can't find that notebook of data, though. Frowner

http://www.federalpremium.com/products/details/handgun.aspx?id=398 they're claiming 1410FPS, no mention of test platform. You could try contacting Federal for more details, though how forthcoming they'd be is anyone's guess.

Thanks, guys. Factory specs are informative, but the ammo sometimes doesn't perform from ordinary guns as well as it does from pressure test guns.

I want to know what it'll do from three and four inch revolver barrels.

Maybe someone will see this who's tested it.
I suspect that this would knock the daylights out of a coyote or bobcat. I may need to employ it on large dogs, too.

I know I was breaking 1300 fps from the 2 1/4" SP, but I just can't remember more than that. Frowner Sorry.

All I can say is that I've shot woodchucks and Perma-Gel with 125 gr. Remington SJHPs. If you don't already have the Federals (which I have no experience with), I'd recommend the Remingtons in anything from a snubby to a 6" cannon.

Don't carry a gun because of what may happen today. Carry because once, just once, and at the least likely time imaginable, you may run into the worst monster you ever could imagine. Be their worst nightmare and resist them with all the stubbornness that our pioneer ancestors posessed. To do less is to be unamerican.

I have some of the Federal load, but haven't shot it yet. Will see how it does.

One of the guns is a three-inch SP-101. Probably going to be too hot for comfort in that one...

Erich, thanks. If you recall that it gives over 1300 FPS in a snub, that IS impressive!

125 gr. SJHPs were a bit much in my 2 1/4" Taurus 605 when I first tried them. I practiced until it was a nonissue. Those Federals may be a challenge now, but if you have normal recoil tolerance them should be quite doable with practice in an SP-101.
