Yesterday I picked up a bunch of ammo from an estate and found these. I have never before run across the Remington 158 gr Metal Point in the 1970s box. Index # R356M4. With all the contraversy on over penetration of the 38 and 357s during the 1970s, i'll bet they didn't sell alot of this stuff.

Neat.
Sellier & Bellot currently makes a 158gr fmj .357mag. i bought some though i am not sure why. i also feel that they would be some seriously overpenetrating rounds in most uses but i suppose the .357 was invented to punch through car bodies, these should just about do it lengthwise on a modern car.
Regards,
Rich

i believe it is ball ammo (AKA fmj)it is not too common to see .357mag done this way presumably because it will be overpenetrative and likely not as effective a stopper/killer as a softpoint or hp or swc. all i can figure it'd do better than other loads is sail through a carbody. i imagine an LEO in the seventies might have liked to keep a speedloader of these on his person just in case the days events called for something like that.
or i could be totally off base.
regards,
Rich

I'm suprised to hear that Sellier & Bellot still make this. I would think it doesn't have much of a following. I can tell you that I have never seen any fellow officer in SE Michigan carrying this stuff in my 3 decades on the job.
I'm going to have to chronograph some of these this week end and see what they sailing out as. May try it on some vest material too, although I wouldn't expect it to penetrate it.
Anyone else ever use any of this or the Sellier & Bellot on anything?

S&B 158 gr. FMJ is good and cheap mid-level 357 magnum ammo. It has jacketed RNFP bullet with deep cannelure groove; I clocked it at around 1150 fps from 4" GP100. Used to use it for practice but I don't think it's meant for carry.
