I found this interesting pre-war box which was marketed for Colt. They had an aversion to having a cartridge named by Smith & Wesson. Same components if I remember correctly. I thought it was cool enough to show.

I think that the only difference was that the Colt Special had a flat nose lead slug and the S&W Special had a round nose lead slug.

Nice post and photos.

Wonder if the flat nose of that .38 Colt Special could offer a tiny bit more "smack".

That was the theory. It is about the shape of a modern JHP before it hopefuly expands.

That was Gen. Hatcher's opinion, though I don't think he gave any evidence of it.

Yes, I think the Hatcher Factor allows +5% for a small flat point.
