Ok, I recently picked up my model 68, and I was wondering what .38 Special load the LAPD used? I know that we still issue the 158 +p+ Lead SWCHP for our model 66's.
Any answers will be appreciated. Stan |

When the LAPD carried the six inch Model 14 K-38 Masterpiece revolver and later the four inch Model 15 Combat Masterpiece, the issue load was the .38 Spl 200 gr RNL Super Police. I've read that the patrol officers hated this load, but the then C.O.P. Gates insisted that it be used. Any officer caught with any other load in his revolver was subject to a suspension.
I understand that you are a Wisconsin State Correction Officer. I'm a retired Federal C.O. from the US Penitentiary at Terre Haute, IN. The issue revolvers when I hired in 35 years ago were prewar Colt Official Police four incher and the load was the old 158 gr RNL. Later these old OP's were sold off to a local FFL for only one dollar each. They were replaced with four inch taper barrel Model 10's. The issue load was the WCC +P+ 110 gr JHP "Treasury Load". Annual qualification was fired with whatever brand of 148 gr HBWC was cheapest. After I retired, the Model 10's were replaced with a DAO Ruger P89 9mm and El Dorado 124 gr StarFire JHP. IMHO, they should have stayed with the Model 10. Roadster |

Since we are on the bottom of the food chain in the state, some still have the 66 for transport officers and white shirts. Some of the bigger places have .40 S&W autos for ERU.
They tried the Beretta Cougar and it didn't work well, I beleive thay now have the Ruger. We still use the Mini 14 and 870 for towers Stan |

If you're referring to the jhp .38 Special load that LAPD issued, it was the Remington 125-grain +P scalloped-jacketed jhp. The Remington catalog number was "R38S2", as I recall. The CHP used 110-grain +P+ .38 Special jhp's in their S&W Model 68 revolvers, usually the Winchester version. |
