Need to find some .38 special 148 gr. wadcutters to use in my 586(for PPC shooting) Reasonably priced. My 6" 586 really likes Remington Match 38 wadcutters, but they have skyrocketed in price. Anybody have any suggestions? Sellier&Bellot works good, but places are out of stock.... Used some Ultramax today(smokey/dirty!) Thanks

It's time for you to start reloading.

It might not be the info you want, but I'm with Ron. I've never seen a factory wadcutter loading that was reasonably priced. Accordingly, I've never bought a factory wadcutter loading! Smiler I have however loaded and fired quite a few WCs: this is a particularly easy and forgiving round to load.

Anyway, sorry; in over 20 years of this hobby, I've yet to see the factory wadcutter ammo that was reasonably priced.

Shot-placement is king. Adequate penetration is queen. Everything else is angels dancing on the heads of pins.

With the craziness in the commodity prices and the action in Iraq and other spots this cost of wadcutters being 'reasonable' isn't going to happen anytime soon.
Try and find factory wadcutters; forget the price - its damn tuff unless some factory shipments have been made recently. Even places that supposedly stock Black Hills ammo don't have it in stock!

I've been using Georgia Arms 148 WC at $12.50 or so for 50, but their prices may have gone down.

keppelj and I agree. This stuff is advertised 750-fps, and the 158-gr SWC I've bought from them has been incredibly consistent (ES 14.29-fps and SD of 5.91-fps)

Ditto what he said!

Target ammo has always been expensive because it is always loaded more carefully and to more exacting standards than regular service ammo. Target shooters are exceedingly finicky - just look at how expensive standard velocity .22LR target ammo is compared to the cheap promotional stuff. You can buy a 500-count brick of the cheap Rem. stuff for what a 50-round box of Rem.-Eley std. velocity target .22 costs!

If you don't want to get into reloading yourself, check www.mastercast.net. They offer .38sp 148gr DEWC reloads for $8.79/fifty, or $5.92 if you send them your brass. I've fired off almost five thousand of their reloads without a problem. Prompt, inexpensive, reliable, unlike some reloading services I have used in the past.

Count me in with Ron and Erich. It's work learning to reload and getting set up, but the ability to make the ammo that you want, save money and learn tons about guns and ammunition is well the effort.

Don't carry a gun because of what may happen today. Carry because once, just once, and at the least likely time imaginable, you may run into the worst monster you ever could imagine. Be their worst nightmare and resist them with all the stubbornness that our pioneer ancestors posessed. To do less is to be unamerican.

I agree, they produce good reloads for a fair price.

Hey keppelj and nitesite: I went to a gun range at a gun shop and when I told them I had, among other ammo, Georgia Arms (it happened to be the 158 swc--38 spl)) they told me that they do not allow any reloaded ammo to be shot at the range (the only Georgia ammo that is original is the JHP G-38G)--only original manufacture. I don't know if this is true in many other shops/ranges but it was in Myrtle Beach.

Start reloading, if your anywhere near the cheap p***k I am! You can duplicate the quality (easily!) of Remington, or Federal's product, at about 60% of the price. If you ever buy and shoot any of the big bores, you'll be glad you started!
