I was born and grew up in Midland, leaving there for Lansing in 98. I lived in Lansing intermittently (spent some time here and there, most notably almost a year in Milwaukee) until I left and got married in 2006. The Midland Daily News ran a piece on Evan Marshall and his books when he moved there, and he was quoted as saying that he'd done his Mormon missionary work there years earlier and loved it so much that he wanted to live there. Maybe that's the only city in America where a gun writer moving to town was newsworthy, but he had a nice spread on him in the paper. I suppose Midland seemed better if you weren't from there. Anyway, the Midland Sportsman's club was (maybe still is?) first rate, even having a 600 yard rifle range. I used to shoot on the indoor range at odd hours (they gave you a key to the gate and clubhouse when you were a member) or during the weekday after/between classes (I lived something like seven minutes away) and thus never really met anyone. Back when I lived in Midland, the local ACE sporting goods was the main ticket to buy guns unless one drove up to Clare. (My first knowledge of the .41 Magnum came because ACE could never be bothered to order/stock the ammunition, thus I passed up a couple of deals on 657s and even a cut to 3" nickeled 58). |

Georgia Arms used to sell one, may still. (I just checked their website, www.georgia-arms.com, and the site is temporarily down.) I settled on a handloaded 215gr. hardcast at about 875-900 fps. for my Model 58, but I rarely carry it, anyway. Silvertips would be great, but they hit well below the fixed sights of my 58. I tried loading 210gr. JHPs from Speer (Gold Dots), Nosler and Sierra, and none expanded in water at 900 fps, so I just went back to the cast bullets. |

38-44HD45 : Thanks for the tip. Their site is still down but I'll keep checking. I can handload to the same level but I don't have a source for the nice, soft lead bullets they used. All the ones I've been able to find have been cast hard.
The site is back up. The ammo is about $.37 a round - Stiff but not too bad for .41 mag in today's prices. I'll get an order in shortly. Thanks. This message has been edited. Last edited by: 44forever, Big bang, much smash'em. |

I met Evan at his shop in Midland. Don't carry a gun because of what may happen today. Carry because once, just once, and at the least likely time imaginable, you may run into the worst monster you ever could imagine. Be their worst nightmare and resist them with all the stubbornness that our pioneer ancestors posessed. To do less is to be unamerican. |

Carry in town where licensed, Winchester 175gr. Silvertip. Good control, little flash, adequate expansion for 2-legged vermin in winter clothes.

I too think the 175 grain Silvertip would be the way to go for SD in the 41 Mag. For a general "all-around" great factory load, I also really like the Speer 210 grain Gold Dot. wyatte

Cor-Bon makes a great 170 gr JHP defense load.

I like the Speer 210 Golddots, they hit point of aim. The 175 silver tips are nice to shoot but print low out of my S&W 58.

Despite my complete rejection of the Marshall/Sanow statistics, I happen to think Evan Marshall is a great guy. I've met him twice at SHOT and I'm sure he doesn't even remember me, but I was left with the impression that I just shook hands with a great guy. That impression was cemented by other writers that I know, that have a long association with Marshall, and they all think he's tops.
That aside... I'm still a fan of most of the Silvertip line, and I think it's outstanding in .41 magnum. There are very few rounds in .41 magnum that won't work in the defensive role. The biggest issue in the .41 realm is avoiding excessive penetration. I'd say just stick in the 175-ish and slightly under bullet weight realm and the rest is up to you. Kevin Gibson |

I think Cor-Bon uses 170 grain Sierra jhp bullets in their ammo. I loaded up some for my 3" 657 for ccw. I think they were estimated to be in the 1100fps range. Accurate in my gun.

I just read this in a article from june 2007.
The Bore House in Lampasas, Texas, (512/556-0308) offers custom loads for hard-to-find calibers. Owner Bob Banks sent me a couple of boxes of his .41 Magnum Police Load, consisting of a 215-grain lead semi-wadcutter that clocked 1,025 fps from my Model 58. I hope this help's. I like the Winchester Silvertip Hollow Point. It shoots reasonably well in the Model 58 and Model 657 revolvers that I have. At close range the point of impact may move by about 3-5" between the 175-grain Silvertip and the 210-grain bullet weights. Frankly, sighting in the revolver for the 175-grain Winchester will more than likely be your "best bet" for your "in town" carry load. With Evan Marshall's 86-87% OSS statistics, and what will likely happen in a civilian setting, you'll probably have your "assets" well-covered.

That load leaded my guns like crazy. Fun to shoot, though. "all posts now ISO9001 certified" |
