+1 (They won't penetrate much of anything, but if you're defending yourself against an assailant who is not behind cover, I doubt you'd find a better round.) "What are you gonna do, son? Eyeball me to death?" (Bruce Dern, from 'The Laughing Policeman') |

And Double Tap's round should work pretty well.

not a complete list, but hopefully this might help...
Winchester 200gr Silvertip jhp; Hornady 180gr XTP jhp; Speer 200gr Gold Dot; Federal 200gr lswchp; any mass produced 240gr lswc for deeper penetration; I use 240gr lswc from www.mastercast.net currently for practice; I used to use Ultramax 200gr rnfp cowbow loads for practice until my bank got broke; I keep Hornady 180gr XTP jhp for defense loads in my S&W 629 PowerPort & Ruger Super Blackhawk |

Actully you can still run 44 mag in the gun, but at a reduced FACTORY round. Speer loads their 200 grain Gold Dot in 44 Special to 875fps listed although it acually runs about 830fps or a little less in a 4" barrel 629.
However they also load the same bullet in their 44 Mag load #23971 Short Barrel load listed at 1075fps. It actually runs just over 1000fps in my 4" Mountain gun. It will get a little more reliable expanion too. Also no dealing with the carbon ring in the cylinder when switching from Special to Mag loads. Help your own self, the Government is too busy savin' thierselves. |

While our Supercharged (handgun +P loads) is a good choice for those without significant risks of overpenetration, we actually recommend our SoftShot frangible line as THE best defensive round for most folks in most situations. It will stop a perpetrator now, but is unlikely to shoot through and inadvertently hit anyone/ anything else. The flat point rounds are built to the same point of impact and recoil as the hollow points. They are also frangible, but penetrate more first. In general, we recommend, "Train with flat points; defend with HPs." More ino here -- http://www.customcartridge.com/products/product_softshot.php

Leadhead sells a dandy 255gr Keith which with 8.5gr of Unique pushes along at just over a 1000. Nosler has a JSP which also works for me with either Unique or VV 3N37. I sort of like the big heavy bullet going fast, you can easily push it to 1100 if you want. Modern guns only please.

I'd be willing to try Corbon's 200gr DPX, one of those scratch your head matching .44mag ballistic gel performance.
http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=905183 If you don't have time to read the link, here's one of the quotes from Michail Shovel at Corbon:
After testing about 3,000 rounds of ammo/handloads from various platforms/caliber/bullet weights/powder etc., the 210gr Silvertip at 1570fps/M629Classic simply showed incredible brute force from axial pressure: Silvertips seem to open up very quickly resulting with a lot of interior body mass being sucked out the exit wound. Meaningless details! You're talking about personal defense, shooting a human at close range. Gunfights are for TV and cops.
Read Elmer Keith. ANYTHING in a .44 or .45 ALWAYS ended the fight in old Montana. (Of course, that was before 2" flyweight Charter Bulldogs were invented.) Yeah, we've all read Cirrillo and know nothing is 100%, but were talking about the odds here, and it's hard to argue with history. KeithCarter NRA Life |
