Some of the ammo websites state that their rounds are IPSC Major.......what does that mean?

Is this 9mm ammo?
If so it is loaded up to quite a high pressure and might not be safe in guns not made to fire 9 major.

IPSC is a game that is based on shoot-outs, the same way that chess is based on warfare between nations. Smiler "Major" is an ammunition power level category in that game. "IPSC Major" means that the ammo is loaded to meet that category of ammunition.

Here's an old Charles Petty article that tells more about this element of the game if you want to know it (just don't believe anything he says about S&W locks . . . Wink ):

Shot-placement is king. Adequate penetration is queen. Everything else is angels dancing on the heads of pins.

IPSC Major is the bullet weight in grains X velocity, divided by 1,000. It should be greater than 165 to make major.

"Power Factor" is bullet weight times velocity divided by 1000. Major is 165+. Minor is 125-164. Off-center hits are scored higher with a major caliber than with a minor one.
