I have several boxes of old Winchester Black Talon in 9mm, 40, and 45ACP. What is the legal ramifications of selling ammo (especially this ammo) at a gunshow, privately, or internet auctions? Lots of us bought this stuff when it was "outlawed" because we thought it would increase in value, but I don't think it has.

Perfectly legal here in Ohio I believe. I'd also say that it also does command a premium. I've seen it for $50 or more at some shows.

It was just dropped from production. It was not made illegal. If you want to sell it you can.
It has also went up in value.

If you want to sell it e-mail me a list of what you have and the price.

THE TRUTH IS THAT IT WASN'T EVEN DROPPED FROM PRODUCTION. THEY JUST REMOVED THE BLACK OXIDIZED FINISH ON THE BULLET. WINCHESTER RA9T IS BLACK TALON WITHOUT THE BLACK BULLET. SAME BULLET JUST NOT OXIDIZED.

I am glad to know I had my facts wrong about the "outlawed" deal. Not sure if I am selling right soon or not - my relative and I talked about putting ours together and selling. I knew it went up some in value, just not anything like a lot of folks who bought it thought it would. I did notice on gunbroker.com that the 45ACP brought more money than the others. Naturally, since we have mostly the other calibers.

Thanks for your help,
David

The BT was renamed and moved to the Law Enforcement line of ammo. Product numbers end with SXT ie RA9SXT,RA40SXT, and RA45SXT.

Winchester discontinued production of this in 1998. It was replaced by the T-Series bullet with is still a SXT design.RA9T,RA40T, and RA45T

Many gunshop commandos say the it is the eXact Same Thing but they actually are clueless.

Black Talon is very velocity Dependant and like many early subsonic loads were prone to not expand.

Ranger T-Series does not rely on velocity so it will work well in both full size and compact guns. Since it does not rely on velocity Winchester was able to drop the black lubalux coat on the bullet. This not only saves money but it also brings the BT stigma to rest for Winchester.

They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq . Why don't we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it has worked for over 200 years, and we are not using it anymore.

Hmm, sure would love to have some JHP ammo that didn't depend on velocity. Think how softly it would recoil! Wink (I know what you meant, but sometimes, I just can't help myself. Cool)

Actually there is a thread on AR15 talking about how light the recoil is with the RA9T.

I see Black Talon at the gun shows often,if it had been called something else they would still be making it.

It's now called Winchester Ranger, SXT. Same stuff, different name.

Here's a pic of my 4006 with some Ranger SXT's before they changed the color. My department was issuing them at the time I carried that particular pistol on duty.

Good gun, good ammo.

Oh yes, the evil Black Talon. I still have a bit of 45 around. If you want to sell the .40S&W let me know.
