I buy Estate loads at the local Sportsman's Warehouse. They're American made and work well, and 12 gauge field loads run 7 or 8 bucks a box, sometimes less on special.

I'm afraid that presently there is no such thing as "cheap" ammunition.
Metals on the commodities market have pushed the ammo manufacturers to adjust their prices, very often significantly. Shotgun ammo has gone up an average of 50%. When I was last in the local Walmart three weeks ago, the Winchester 100 rd packs were up to $23+ but the Reminston were still ~$19. That's bound to change...

Last week the local Meijer's store had 10% off all Win. lead shotshell loads. Do not know how long the sale is running. Also had Win Super X 12 and 20 Ga. game loads 6 and 8 shot for $4.00 a box. I took home 20 boxes of the 20 Ga 8's.

Like others have said, the days of cheap ammo is long gone. Walmart has always been one of the cheapest sources of decent 12 ga. at a low price. I say, when you find a great deal, buy as much as you can afford. It ain't going to go bad.

A couple of years ago I bought Remington STS Target and Nitro Gold (premium stuff) for $4.97 a box, and Winchester AA was about the same. That was at Wal-Mart, which was lower than anywhere else.
Last year those brands went up to $5.97. And in December 2007 the Remingtons are now $6.47 and AA is an astounding $7.57 per box! Like I said earlier in this thread, that's a 50% increase. Same with the Value-Pak 100-ct that was $16 but is now $24. I sure am glad that I'm sitting on 300-lbs of Lawrence and STS hard magnum shot and plenty of primers. Dick's Sporting Goods usually funs a sale every few months on Remington Gun Club rounds. Last month I bought a case for just under $47. At $4.70 a box of 25 that comes close to your $16/100 and they are good Shotshells too.

I have some cheap Winchester 12 ga that I got at Wally World a few years ago. Aluminum(?) case heads that expand and don't want to extract from my old double. I've heard this was a somewhat common malady with these types of shells. I would avoid them for sure.

Just to rub it in... a year and a half ago, Academy Sports ran their promo Federal Field & Range 12g shells for $2.38 per box of 25!!! I still have about 40 boxes in the closet.
As others have said, go look at a different Wal-Mart. I was at my local Wally last night and saw 100rd boxes from $19 to $24. I don't remember which brand was cheapest. I'm thinking it was Federal. _________________________________________________________ WARNING: The lead contained in this bullet has been known to the State of California to cause severe injury and even death... especially when travelling at over 1,400 feet per second!
