Currently, I shoot Winchester's 125gr +P JHP in my model 37, and am thinking about switching to the 125gr +P Silvertip.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this round?

Personally, I'd think about Gold Dot Short Barrel +P's, or better yet IMHO, Buffalo Bore 158 gr. LSWC-HP... but maybe that's just me.

RedBerens,

I've used both loads you've mentioned and usually buy what's on sale.

There isn't a nickel's worth of difference in the terminal performance of today's premium JHP ammo.

Pick what you shoot the best out of your particular gun and practice to increase your skill level.

Remington .38+P 125 gr. SJHPs feature an excellent bullet and should be affordable to boot. If I were set on using a 125 gr. .38 +P load, that's where I'd begin my search.

Don't carry a gun because of what may happen today. Carry because once, just once, and at the least likely time imaginable, you may run into the worst monster you ever could imagine. Be their worst nightmare and resist them with all the stubbornness that our pioneer ancestors posessed. To do less is to be unamerican.

RedBerens,
The PD I work for uses Win 125gr +P Silvertip ammo as duty ammo for our revolvers. While we have never had to shoot a human with this ammo, we have shot several animals with it (sick or injured animals) and have had good results. Not exactly what you were looking for but as close as I can get.

The Brassfetcher's 38 Spl geletin test used the 110 gr. standard 38 spl load. The 125 gr. +P load is a better performer. Winchester has it penetrating 12.3" in bare geletin with expansion of .51" w/ 2" barrel.

Good catch there BugEater. I missed the weight difference and stand corrected.

Welcome to the forum by the way. Smiler

Before all the "new and better" ammo came out Remington Golden Saber and Winchester Silvertips were state of the art ammo. I have a few boxes of 125gr .38 Special +P Silvertip ammo but don't use them. (I carry the FBI Load in my .38 Special) I do however carry the 145gr Winchester Silvertip .357 Magnum ammo in my M640. If you are trying to decide between Winchester JHP ammo and Silvertip ammo go with the Silvertip ammo. It's made a little better and it's more accurate IMO.
