I'm going out to a friends place this w-e and was planning on bringing my 18" Winchester 1200. (Among many other guns!) I was going to try some Wolf 2 3/4" slugs (not magnum) I bought last year. I haven't fired slugs in many years, but if my memory serves me correct it is punishing in the recoil department. Anybody shoot slugs recently? Do you still have a shoulder? BTW mine has a stock, not a pistol grip.

You'll be fine. I'd rather shoot the slugs than a magnum turkey load anytime.

Back in 1969, I was a young highway patrolman and one of my duties was range officer for my division.

We were issued brand new shotguns, and it was my job to indoctrinate my division on the aspects of the new weapons.

As it happened I had a pair of Ray-ban sunglasses that had been badly mauled in a squabble with some drunk, the lenses barely stayed in the frames. I could not afford to replace them so I just babied them along.

When it came time to demonstrate the firing of a 12 gauge slug, I raised the gun to my shoulder and fired. Both lenses popped out of my sunglasses and broke on the ground.

You wanna guess how hard it was to convince some of my guys that the Remmy 870's really didn't kick that hard??

My best advice is, if you are bench shooting get a tall fore end support. The idea is if your basically standing from the waist up you will move with the gun. If you are leaning down you will absorb the recoil.

Try some 3" magnum Slugs! Ouch ouch ouch!

1+ Westkybanded said, those 3 inch 2 oz turkey loads really get your attention, also many years ago had some loads from "Active" that were 3 inch 1 1\4 slugs that caused my 870P to act like a auto loader, the recoil automactically rejected the spend case, it was pretty fun.

After seeing what they do to a deer...I would never want to be shot with one. The non-magnum slugs dont kick that hard so you should be fine.

Oh, reeaaallyy!! I beg to differ. Shot mine yesterday about 8-10 times and boy is the shoulder sore today. Course I had nothing but a T-shirt on and the SlugMaster has no recoil pad. Ouch!

Funny thing is when you shoot a deer you don't even notice any "kick".

My Agency issue shotgun is the Mossberg Model 590 12 gauge w/ 14" barrel.
Started qualifying with #00 Buckshot and found that the shot pattern was so spread out that a qualifying score was very difficult. I convinced the "Powers That Be" to change to #4 Buckshot. This was great except the target frames were being destroyed. We now qualify with 12 gauge Slugs.
Recoil is not a problem.

Just got done sighting in a red dot sight on my Mossy 930 SPX. The Auto loader was kinder to my shoulder than my pump guns but you do know ya been kicked! A trick I've learned with heavy loads out of my Marlin 45-70 was to put a slip on recoil pad on it while shooting from the bench, it helps a lot when you are doing load development!

My agency just started allowing slugs. When it came to to qualify I took a firm grip and firmly seated the stock into my shoulder, the memory of shooting slugs being imprinted in my mind.

When I pressed the trigger I had two pleasant surprises. The first being a first round, 50 yard 10-ring hit, the second being the lack of punishment. Those Remington reduced recoil slugs are actually pleasant to shoot!

Someone needs to try the 835 mossbergs chambered for the 3and 1/2 inch shells. I have the gun but have never tried the heavy loads.

I was testing out the pattern and range of my new Mossy 835 Ulti-Mag this past turkey season. I tried a few of everything and I don't think I'll ever shoot another 3-1/2" turkey load again. I didn't even have to rack the forearm, (it's a pump for those that don't know Mossbergs), the recoil did it for me!! And I ain't a little feller!
