Teen wounds 8 students, 1 teacher at German school

By BRIGITTE CASPARY, Associated Press Writer Brigitte Caspary, Associated Press Writer – 53 mins ago
ANSBACH, Germany – An 18-year-old student armed with an ax and knives lobbed Molotov cocktails at his high school in southern Germany on Thursday, wounding eight pupils and a teacher before he was shot and arrested by police.

The teenager entered the Carolinum High School in the Bavarian town of Ansbach on Thursday morning and threw one Molotov cocktail before police were alerted and arrived at the scene, said Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann.

Police smelled smoke when they arrived at the school, Hermann said. They were confronted by the ax-wielding teen, who had thrown a second Molotov cocktail that apparently failed to detonate.

"Since the attacker threatened to use his weapons against the police, the officers opened fire," Hermann said, adding that the attacker, who was not identified, was wounded and in critical condition.

Udo Dreher, the chief police officer at the scene, said the18 year old was shot five times, but was not in life threatening condition.

Two teenage girls were seriously injured by the attacker — one suffering burns and the other head injuries, said Dreher. It was not immediately clear whether the second girl was attacked with the ax or a knife. Authorities did not say how the seven people who suffered light injuries — six students and a teacher — had been attacked.

Dreher said the assailant started his rampage armed with three Molotov cocktails, the ax and two knives. He was arrested 11 minutes after police were called to the scene.

Authorities said the teen had no police record and it was not immediately clear what his motive might have been. Officials said there was no indication that he had said anything during the attack.

Fire service official Horst Settler said no major fires broke out in the school and its roughly 700 students were evacuated and taken to a nearby building.

Prosecutor Gudrun Lehnberger said the 18-year-old male student at the school was being held on suspicion of attempted murder. Lehnberger said the initial investigation would concentrate on determining a motive for the attack, which came only three days after the new school year started in Bavaria.

According to its Web site, Carolinum was founded in 1528, making it the second-oldest public high school in Bavaria. Today, the school offers curriculum based on the humanities and music for grades five through 13.

The incident was the second attack on a school in Germany this year.

In March, 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer fatally shot 12 people at his former school in the southwestern town of Winnenden. He fled the building and killed three more people before turning the gun on himself.

That was the nation's second-worst school shooting after a 2002 shooting spree in Erfurt that left 17 dead, including the gunman.

After Kretschmer's attack in Winnenden, Germany moved to tighten checks on gun owners.

Living proof, a length of plumbers pipe, a cricket bat, or 2 to 3 billiard balls in a doubled sock. Machete's, cleavers, or butcher knives. "Asymmetrical" is the word for it, isn't it? The Molotov cocktail was the anti-tank IED of WWII. Any and/or everything...

Absolutely, the girl at Yale: evidently strangled with bare hands.
Nuts will do what they do, only the very unrealistic think evil can be stopped. Some humans are evil, they will do evil things.

Default 5 Rounds on Target and He's Still Breathing?

Udo Dreher, the chief police officer at the scene, said the 18 year old was shot five times, but was not in life threatening condition.

THIS is exactly why the 9 millimeter round is to be distrusted and despised. Every time I start thinking about how convenient one of the wundernines would be as a carry piece, I see something like this and it snaps me back to reality. Yes, that 4-inch Model 19 or 4-3/4 inch M-1911A1 is a little heavy and a little bulky, but with them there is scant chance of putting 5 rounds on target and still having to wonder about whether the puke involved makes it to the emergency room.

It would also be nice to know something about bullet placement before condemning the round in use.

If there was some distance between the axe-wielder and the (multiple) police officers, it's just possible they shot out his legs, not intending to shoot to kill unless and until he closed on them. Just a thought.

I have posted before and will continue to sound the alarm:

Evil is alive and well.

Until we as a nation and as decent people decide that we will no longer tolerate evil, it will live among us and flourish.

We must stand against evil, it is not easy, but oh so necessary.

Angry

I recall one night about two years ago, a crack head out in the alley was camped between a dumpster and the mechanical room door I needed to enter. Well, he apparently disapproved of having my company when I tried to unlock the door? He lunged at me with a whittle sharpened green wood tree branch about 30" long. He rode the lightning of a maglite look alike stun gun. Like I said, everything and anything.

If somebody's bent on killing, they could do it with a Q-tip if that's all they had at their disposal.

You know...if you stop and think about it, a Molotov cocktail could kill MANY more people and do infinitely more property damage than any small arms fire.
So why isn't somebody tryin' to outlaw bottles, gasoline and rags?

I've done it several times-but it's still classified.

G Gordon Liddy recommends a wooden pencil, I have always preferred a straightened out paper clip.
I will try the recommended “Q-Tip”, unfortunately it is not listed in the F S 790.01 as one of the options for concealed carry. So I am uncertain what would happen if I am found with a supply of the same on my person. Pencils and paperclips seem to still be legal.
