Default 100 yard .22 rifle?

Our member range has rifle target distances of 100, 200, and 300 yards.

I'm wondering what it would cost to get into a rifle that would consistently group respectably at that distance from the bench using regular sand bag rests and a scope? I don't need world record accuracy but enough that it would make recreational shooting pleasurable and not an exercise in frustration every time out because of inconsistencies. Though I understand there is some of that inherent in the rimfire cartridge and I'll have to put some time in finding the ammo that the gun likes.

At this time I just have run of the mill .22's - several Ruger 10/22's and a Marlin 39A.

I have seen some 10/22's that are capable of good accuracy at 100 yards, but the ones that I've observed had a number of aftermarket parts. I'm not particularly hung up on whether the rifle is bolt, lever, or semi. Although I will always have at least one 10/22 and I'm well vested in magazines and such for said rifle.

So I don't know if I should just put money into one of my 10/22's or if I should look at one of the bolt action rifles like maybe the CZ, or Savage? I'm not sure which way would be less expensive, although either way I'll need to cough up the bucks for the optic.

Thanks

You want to get a Ruger 77/22 put a leupold 2x7 rim fire scope on it and get a nice trigger job (I use Clark Custom Guns).I've got approx $450 total in my rig (which tells you how long I've had it )

Depends on what you want to spend and type of rifle you want- need a bit more information here.

Do you want a heavy barreled gun, or a real "bench gun" that is made for nothing other than target shooting?

An Anschutz 1913 with a wood stock would be hard to beat, and is what several guys in this neighborhood use- it is the top of line, but be prepared to spend some $$$'s! It's big, heavy, very specialized for target shooting and is something you won't be able to sell to anyone else unless they want this particular gun.

Now, down from this, you could find a good used Winchester 52 or Remington 40X in .22. Both of which are top of the line U.S. made guns. Both will also cost you big $$$$ to find one that isn't all shot out, or sold as a "collectors" item.

Some people have had some good luck with the Kimbers, whereas I, and many others in our club have not at all, and have wound up buying/trading for a CZ or two.

I have had a CZ-452 for silhouette for several years now, and will second them for something in the "base" price range and will give you good service for many, many years and there isn't very much not to like about them- steel magazines that don't split, decently adjustable triggers (more on that in a second) and generally look good.

As for the triggers on the CZ's- don't file or polish them at all!!!! There is soft metal under the trigger and sear once you break through the surface hardness. Just buy an aftermarket trigger and sear and install them for more adjustment if you need them. Other than that, the only thing I can say is they have become very proud of these rifles and they aren't the buy they once were.

This is mine, Ultra Light Arms Model 20 rimfire. It has shot sub 1 inch groups @ 100 yards. It weighs about 6 pounds scoped. Due to the light weight, she requires real concentration to shoot well. While the rifle is certainly capable, I'm not always capable. Doping conditions is a huge part of shooting small groups at 50 yards and over.

The Savage comes with the excellent Accu-Trigger. Everyone at my club who has a Savage, rim or center fire, is quite pleased with them.

If you should decide to go with a CZ452 you may want to change the action screws, striker spring, and the plastic magazine well. The new JP kit has three screws. The steel magazine well maybe purchased from “Brunoman” (??) at Rimfire Central forum.

Default Barrel length?

Thanks for the replies, I'll start looking at the suggested rifles.

I just took a quick look at Buds Guns and see they have quite a few CZ 452. I didn't realize they came in so many barrel length options.

Ultra lux - 28.6
Lux - 24.8
American - 22.5 or 16
Varmit - 20.9

For .22 off the bench at 100 yards with scope shooting at bullseye targets, using mostly run of the mill .22 ammo and occasional match ammo is there any sort of guideline in terms of preferred barrel length?

Is longer better or is there some length where anything more does not return improved results?

Your 39A may surprise you at 100 yards with a scope.
While Anschutz and the CZs are very nice as well as the winchester 52s, You will find that many .22s will shoot very well at 100 yards.
My 39a will shoot 2" at 100 if I do my part, Usually 3" for me though.
Try and shoot the 39 at shorter distances with irons and sand bags and see what happens, You may be happy, Mine is scoped.

Kimber 82G (government)
Shoots almost as well as 40X's and 52's.
Available brand new from CMP for $600.00. They started with 18,000 and are down to less than 5000 in stock.
Guys are going to be kicking themselves for not buying after they are all gone.

A number of studies have shown that the .22 LR cartridge gets maximum velocity in a barrel of about 19 inches. Longer barrels are great for sight radius, but there is no velocity advantage in going longer than that.

I regularly shoot out to 100 yards off the bench with my Mossberg Model 44US target rifles with the Lyman apeture sites. I bought these through the CMP a few years ago for cheap, not sure what they go for these days.

Anschutz has won more Olympic medals than any other rifle ever made, and more than most of them combined. My 1973 vintage 1407 will grip inside 1/4" at 100 yards when the wind cooperates. My 64 sporter will do inside 1/2" at 100 yards. This is with match grade ammo, which will be the deciding factor with any gun you get. Most of the brands that have been listed will group under 1" at 100 yards with the right ammo.

Default optimum barrel length is 16.0 inches

If the sight radius is of no importance and optics are to be used the optimum barrel length is 16.0 inches. As for a Kimber shooting close to a 40x some examples may.

I had a CZ453 American with a Burris FullField II that would out shoot much more expensive 22's. I recently traded it to a buddy for his CZ452 American in 17HMR that now wears the same Burris scope and it will shoot the wings off a gnats...errr...fanny at 100 yards.

Best rifle for the $$ in MY book...CZ USA!!

PS...if I were only going to shoot off a bench and bags I would get the Varmint version.

My $0.02:
For accuracy on a budget, I'd recommend the Izhmach Biathlon:

Not much to look at, but it has a hammer forged, crowned and chrome lined barrel; also a quick, reliable & solid "toggle" breach action. The wood is cheap birch and the magazine is plastic, but I've had mine for about 5 years and it has been a solid performer and does well with Federal bulk-pack ammo. I think they're going for around $325 these days.
Next, I would recommend the CZ 452/Brnu Model 1:

This one, an old Brnu Mod-1, from around 1952, is a re-finished eastern European trainer with a cheap scope added to it. It's like a mini-Mauser and it is a tack driver. It's a bit more ammo sensitive than the Biathlon, but it meets the CMP Rimfire Sporter specs for weight whereas the Biathlon is a bit over. J&G had these a few years back for around $200. The new CZ's are quite a bit more (around $450, I think), but they are worth it (much better wood and finish).
About the only other 100-yd 22 that I could recommend based on my own experience would be the Win-52:

Mine is a 52-D (single shot). Expensive, heavy and ammo-sensitive; I've also recently found the trigger to be somewhat persnickety. But when all its stars are aligned, it'll group well within 1" at 100 yards.
All-in-all, I find that I take the Biathlon and the Brnu-1 to the range more often than any of my other rifles; the Brnu-1 for 3-position and the Biathlon more for bench shooting. -S2

If you are just going to hunt the 39 Marlin with a 3x9 AO Leupold that is made for a .22 will work just fine. If you are going to target shoot get an Anschultz and a 36X Leupold. Larry

This well used Anschutz was a high school shooting rifle, It was about 350,,, I popped the Unertl 15X on it and it will do 1/2" goups at 50 yards with old $9 a brick bulk ammo.
I havent tried match grade ammo in it nor have I tried it from a shooting stand, Only with front bag thus far!
I agree with above poster,,,,,, 39 for hunting and I will add mild target work.
The old BRNOs are also great shooters and are very reasonable in cost!

Peter, nice Annie. I had a Savage/Anschutz 64 left hand target rifle back in the early 70's. Not quite as heavy as the current rifles. Mine wore a Lyman Supertargetspot 15X. I sniped a few squirrels with it.

I agree that a good 39A is no slouch.

If I were looking for a new gun, I would be looking for an Anschutz silhouette model. They used to make them with a short, stiff barrel and a pretty sturdy stock. Nothing much to look at, but the thing was not intended as a sporter - just a pure steel dinger. Don't know if the model is made anymore, but that would be my choice for what you describe.

I often shoot my Kimber .22 hunter at 100 yards, the rifle shoots far better than I can. It shoots well enough to compete with much heavier rifles and has won me quite a bit of money in my clubs Sunday fun matches.

Here is a 100 yard group shot from a concrete bench using a bi-pod and lead rear bag. The conditions were as dead calm as I have ever seen.

One of the guys at my club found the Biathlon stuck in a rack at a gun store. He is quite happy with it and the toggle action is interesting.

If I get a chance I will shoot this one tomorrow. I have been eying this one for a while and could pick it up for less than 300. most luckily around 200. I know nothing about it so what you see in the pic is all I know. The trigger breaks clean but is too sharp around the edges.

Actually I could use a history lesson on this.

Maybe it's got something to do with the age of it, but my scoped Ruger 10-22 will keep 'em in the 9 ring all day long. I say that because it'll tear out the 10 ring, but there'll be a few fliers.

I bought it new in 1972, so perhaps they spent more effort on them.

Ammo of choice, Winchester Wildcat.

No, The CZ 452 recievers are not drilled, but they do have a rail milled in them.

I got the "target" version of the 10/22, laminated stock & heavy bull barrel; put a 4x fixed power 'scope on it; with Remington "Yellow Jacket" or "Viper" ammo, can consistently do a three inch group at 100 yards. With that heavy barrel, can shoot all day with no heat problem.

OK in post # 29 I said if I got a chance to shoot the Mossberg 114 at 100 yds I would. This shot group was with winchester expert hv bulk ammo from WW. 8 rounds in under 1 min. slight gust 5 to 10 mph some what diagonally left to right and in my face. This is with peep sights. About 3 inches. I shot 1 group with CCI stingers and pasted over them. I wish I had some good ammo and a little less wind. I think this thing done OK. I would like to find a different front sight. Maybe just a post instead of the post with a hole in it.

Actually I could use a history lesson on this.
I used to own one of those 144LSBs in high school.
Shot matches and varmints with it.
it held it's own with much more expensive rifles

Hard to beat the CZ rimfire models. I have the 453 in .17HMR with single set trigger, topped with a BSA Sweet 17.
I know, some don't think highly of BSA scopes, but this one is really sweet with compensated range adjustments for the chambering.
