I am in the market for a good leather rifle sling. So far I am looking at the Montana sling, and Brownell's Latigo sling. Do any of you have any advice? It will be used for both carrying and shooting the rifle. I plan to use it on both a bolt action Mauser sporter and a Browning BAR.

You didn't mention what rifle you want to use the sling on and how you plan to use it. Will you use the sling only for carrying or do you plan to use it to help support the rifle when shooting? Also do you need it just for shoulder carry or for some other carry position?

My advice would be to forget leather, and look at the Claw slings.

Some folks take looks over functionality, but these things are the real deal!

N4zov pretty much nailed it, but for what it's worth I use and prefer the U.S. M 1907 sling.

For rifles that I carry I like the Neoprene padded nylon slings. They are very comfortable, light weight, and won't slip off your shoulder.

IMO hands down, the finest rifle sling made is the adjustable A-1 Murray Rifle Sling.

I guess I'm showing my military past, here, but for my money, the U.S. standard cotton web sling meets all of my needs. Easy to adjust, wide enough for comfortable carry, can make a "hasty sling" in an instant, and a target sling in but a few moments. On sporting rifles, I dispense with the metal clip that terminates it at one end because it rattles (I used to do this on my issued military arms as well, because I never understood alerting the enemy to one's presence). With QD sling swivels, there's no disadvantage to doing this. OK, it's not the most beautiful sling in the world, but it's sure one of the most practical for nearly all purposes. Here's a couple on an M1 and an M14. The M1 has a WWII issue sling, while the M14 has one from more current stocks.

Without knowing the intended purpose, it's hard to say which of the many so-called "slings" will do the job best. But to me the M1907 leather military sling qualifies and the GI cotton sling too. They've been good enough for multiple wars and innumerable rifle matches.

How about a 1907 sling with a synthetic twist?

For slings, this guy is tops. Makes great military slings. Expensive but worth it.

I just looked at the Montana sling and it is a nice leather version of what we used to call a "slip sling" in the Corps. By weaving the nylon sling through the top keeper a certain way it gave the shooter great versatility. I always loved the slip sling because it was ready to make into the proper sized hasty sling no matter how many layers you had on, the downside was it was just a cheap ugly nylon sling that was out of place on a fine sporting rifle.


Right now I'm just using a padded Cobra, but I will be buying a Montana sling right away. Thank you for making this thread and turning me on to this device.

I have a Turner biothane sling, it's very well made and has good hardware. 1907 slings of this sort are used differently than hunting rifle slings. I guess it depends on whether you just want to carry the gun over your shoulder, or do something more.

I have a Turner M1907 leather sling on my .270 which I will be toting through the Colorado wilds here in less than a week, hunting for Rocky Mountain elk. This will be my second season with it, so far I like it. The one shot I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to take last year didn't lend itself to using the sling as it was a quick shot off-hand at a cow running full tilt through a small clearing.

The sling does a good job and is easily adjustable, though learning to properly use the M1907 style slings can be challenging.

I just bought this safari sling for my CZ rifle. I like the advantage of having the gun in the ready position.
