Default Springfield Armory 1911 Stainless

I was well set on buying one of these and then I noticed the dreaded lock built into the mainspring housing. I'm wondering if i can replace the housing with a standard one. Anyone know?

Thumbs up

Hey Nathan, I own one of the Springfield Armory 1911 Stainless Mil-spec and I can recommend it w/o reservation. I shot mine 500 times w/ Remington greenbox as a recommended break-in and had NO failures to feed, shoot, eject, etc. My gunsmith/buddy Stoney did his reliability package on it, and it is an outstanding gun for the money. The factory lock bugged me at first, but now I don't even notice it. It would be cool to get the replacement, however. Buy one, you'll be getting a good pistol.

I had a Springfield Compact with the lock. It was an easy fix. I bought a new mainspring housing asembly and I believe a strut.

How to remove the ILS, with pics, part-numbers & descriptions. - 1911Forum

This information is taken from the 1911 Forum. This should answer the question concerning the mainspring housing. As always the pictures are worth a thousand words.

I've had two SA 1911s with the lock. Just replace them with whatever aftermarket mainspring housing you desire. Howver, you will have to get a new mainspring cap, as the SA one will not work with a new housing.
