New Marlin 39A goes to the range this morning
and a gentleman there said you are not supposed to use lead ammo in these because of the special microgroove rifling.
True or False?
If true, why in the world would Marlin change the rifling design, much less to a design that doesn't work well with lead bullets of all things?
I'm hoping this is gun range rumor and speculation as it makes no sense to me.
Thanks

False!
All of the .22 ammunition I know of is lead or lead with a copper wash.
Why would Marlin make a rifle that could not use the predominate ammunition made for a .22 rimfire?
Mine really likes lead!
Even my 336A in 30-30 does OK with lead.
The micro-groove barrel not liking lead has been around for a long time but thought this story was limited to the centerfires?

I have shot thousands of rounds of leads 22 through mine, it has the micro-groove rifling. Our club shoots standard velocity 22's for targets, always lead. Look at this site for info RFC Home they have a Marlin sub-forum. http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums...splay.php?f=20

The statement has nothing to do with the rimfires,,only the centerfires.
They do just fine with 22rf ammo which is all lead. The change from the earlier 'Ballard' style rifling (conventional) probably had more to do with cutting production costs than anything.
Many center fire shooters claim that their Marlin Microgroove centerfire barrels won't shoot cast lead bullets as well as a standard 6 (or what ever # groove) barrel. Others seem to have been able to get great results.
Any one of the cast bullet forums usually has alot of back and forth about MicroGroove/cast bullet centerfire accuracy or lack of it.

Wayne02. Another good example of someone talking and not knowing what they are talking about. Larry

I bought a 39A off my mom when my dad passed away about a year and a half ago. Shot it as a kid (long time ago) and thought it was the best. I have put all kinds of ammo through it. I have mixed and matched. Shorts, long rifle, etc. Flawlessly. Great gun and nothing to worry about!
