Winchester 73 in 44-40
Added this to the collection. From the serial number it is from 1888. Most of the bluing is still on the receiver and magazine tube, but it is considerably thinned. The barrel has some of the bluing still evident. Bore is very good. The crescent buttstock has the buttoned latch that has the cleaning kit. The kit is with the gun. Stocks are honest wear with no flaws.

Giz, nice levergun!
Every once in a while I will mentally pull back from the table full of S&W revolvers to let my wide-angle imagination work for a while, and my mind conjures up images of late 19th-century lever action rifles. I've got to believe one or two of them will fall into my hands at some point. Pictures and stories like this one don't do anything to dissuade me.

An 1873 in 38-40 is a elusive gun. I have the 32-20....and even have knowledge of a .22 calibers location.
But I'm basically a 1892 man...as it is the nicest of all the Winchesters...

Gizamo - I have a 32-20 made in 1890. The only one that I have ever handled. The dust cover slides open when the muzzle lifted which seems
too loose. Common on these? Remedy?

klondike.....
Sorry, I'm not mush help....not sure of the repair needed to tighten it up. Mine have enough tension to hold them in position.
Whenever I see one here in Maine, I'm thankful that the dust cover is still with the gun. Many folks eliminated them along with the latch for the lever.

I don't know if they made 73's with "heavy round" barrels, but your barrel looks heavier than my round barreled 92.

Had a round barrel '73 rifle years back. Had a case head separation with it with a smokeless load(4759?) and no ear protection. All the blast went in my right ear which was no fun at all.
As to the dust cover, it's been a long time--but I think there is a small spring on the underside of the dust cover to provide some friction and keep it closed. I think replacements are available from Dixie, et al.

Thanks - I was inspired tonight to find an answer and I did locate a source for that spring.
