History Channel Beretta
Hi:
Watching the History Channel's "History of Beretta Firearms" I was stunned by a movie clip from Roger Moore as "James Bond" using a Beretta pistol that was clearly a Walther PPK??.
Anyone else see this program?

In the first movie, James Bond carried an old Berretta (sic) .25 auto...he was called into "M"s office and told to turn it in for a Walther PPK "which hits like a brick through a plate glass window...the American CIA swear by them...."
During the course of the series, I saw a bad guy with a Colt 1911 to which Bond replies, "That's a Smith and Wesson and you've had your six..." before shooting him with a silenced FN M1910 and NOT his standard Walther.
Then, of course is the Charter Arms AR-7 sniper rifle in .25 caliber.
The people who did the Bond movies knew VERY little about firearms other than that they shoot. Even Ian Fleming himself wasn't very gun savvy.

Good idea! I never thought of throwing a PPK at the target.

If you read the original Fleming novels, you might be surprised by his knowledge of weapons. In the original "Dr. No" neither the Walther nor the Beretta appear. He uses Colt revolvers (New Service that's cut down and Police Positive with the short barrel). The movies ruined some wonderful writings. IMHO.

Doug, at the beginning of the "Dr. No" book, James Bond is forced to give up his Berretta 418, .25 caliber, in favor of one of two new sidearms. He could use the Walther PPK in 7.65mm, or the S&W Centennial Airweight in .38 Special. He eventually chose the Walther because of the higher round capacity. However, he took the S&W Airweight (pre-Model 42) to Jamaica.
I believe there's a passage where Bond sends a telegram to "M", stating the inability of a S&W revolver to defeat the "dragon". However, this is a different S&W from the Airweight.
I agree with you, that the movies ruined some great writing. The gee whiz, techno-**** takeover, and Roger Moore, ruined a great series.

Ditto on that smirking poser, Roger Moore. Merde!
The Daniel Craig movies are pretty entertaining, though. Less humor, more action! That's the ticket!
