Default What the....? Ruger demands serial number to order ANY part!!!

This blows my mind totally and really miffs me.

I called up to order extra screws for the ejector housing on my Bisley Single-six that I bought new last year...

They demand a serial number for any part no matter how insignificant. I told the nice lady politely that I didn't have the serial number handy and just don't see the reason that I should have to give the serial number for any reason anyway.
She explained that they do this to insure that they don't send out the wrong part. What if I wanted to get some stainless screws for a blued gun...I'd be out of luck.

I am writing a letter to them and asking them what the **** is going on and have they lost their minds?!?! I'm not going to give them my serial number for any reason whatsoever. I no longer trust them.

That's the last Ruger that I shall ever purchase unless they change this policy. It kinda made me mad.

Maybe they do this because they don't want to sell parts or deal with customers any longer.

You can bet that it's their legal department's advice RE: product liability.
This nonsense will not end W/O tort reform, unfortunately.

Andy,

I believe it has to do with the Old Model Blackhawks and Single Sixes that do not pass the drop test on a loaded gun. They will not sell the parts if the Old Model has not been safety converted by Ruger. The only way they can verify the parts they are selling is not going into a Old Model without the safety conversion is to get a serial #.

They wont come out and say that for sure. But over on the Ruger Forum there has been much discussion regarding this issue.

I'll modify my serial number then.

They've made me just a bit perturbed.
It's a screw for crying out loud!!!

*Update*

I called them back...and gave them a "modified" serial number- no problem then.

It just aggravated me that I had to do that in the first place.

Car manufacturers have been doing this for a decade. With everything on computer, when they make a change in production they know just which gun it started at. True, they don't need it for the older stuff. There are still parts at Brownell's, etc.

Under the Patriot act, and in conjunction with the FBI, Homeland Security, the NSA, CIA and PTA, Ruger's serial number database is directly linked to the NCIC database on stolen guns and guns owned by enemies of the state, too bad for you the number you made up is a hit on several HOT databases.

The black helicopters will arrive just after dark, ask no questions, and be ready to go (away for a long time).

Ain't it great living in a free country . . . they have the freedom to conduct business as they see fit and you have the freedom to shop elsewhere.

The same thing happened to me when I tried to purchase parts for an "unconverted" single-six made in 1958. Ruger said "no sale" unless I send the revolver in. I shopped elsewhere.

I just ordered two receiver pins for a 10/22 and they didn't ask for a serial number.

I TRIED to order a replacement magazine spring for a Ruger Mdl 77 Tang Safety a few years ago for one that had broken and found out after I refused to give them the serial # there is a safety recall on the trigger stop for the Mdl 77 Tang Safety models. I was told to send in the trigger assembly, with serial number, and they would install the new trigger overtravel stop and return the modified part to me. This was one week before the opening of deer/rifle season in Tennessee. I told them I would get the spring elsewere and ordered a replacement from Jack First. I used the Mdl 77 as a single shot the first weekend of deer season. When I received the mag spring I also received the new overtravel stop free of charge. All that was required to remove and install the overtravel screw was an Allen wrench, that was supplied with the overtravel screw.

Rant On. AIN'T NO WAY IN HELL I'M GIVING THEM THE SERIAL NUMBERS FROM ANY OF MY GUN'S. Rant Off

Sorry, Red Neckerson was peaking out from under my collar.

I got rid of every last Ruger in my modest arsenal years ago when Bill sold out to the government. Haven't even allowed one in the house since but, recently I've been reconsidering. After all, Bill's dead and they do make some intersting stuff. Nope, guess not, after reading this they can just keep their ****. Besides, who wants a gun with the whole owners manual stamped in the barrel? No Rugers allowed on these premises!

Those idiots told me I had to send in my SP-101 to get a DAO hammer installed. They wouldn't send me the part. Oh well, my disc sander works fine.

And some people say that those black helicopters don't exist! Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to find my roll of aluminum foil and make me a hat. -Ed

They tried that B.S with me but being "In the know" I was wearing my "reynolds wrap" hat during the call. They're probably still looking for me! LOL
