Members inpressions of Dan Wesson 1911 Commander 1911 bobtail
Wondered into local gun store and they had a NIB Stainless Dan Wesson 45 bobtail commander size, and the goodies that go with it for 910.00. Reading their literature they state they use Wilson, Novak, and highly finished parts, action was tight and fit was upper end quality. Checkered front grip, memory grip safety, Novak night sights etc. Fit slide to frame was tighter than some higher priced 1911's. Looked like a Wilson barrel???Anybody know anything good or bad...Asking price 910.00 +tax 7% Slide forged, frame cast, both stainless steel. Seemed like a lot of goodies for the price. However I know ta ta about Dan Wesson autos, remember their revolvers were hell for stout. Box says CZ. I do understand that CZ bought or took control of them some time back....Any info would be helpful.....thanks

They are a lot of gun for the money, and that's a good price. I love mine!

I had a few of the revolvers and loved them, never had one of the 1911s but one of the guys I shoot bowling pins with had one. It looked great but he had lots of jams. I’m not sure how many of the problems were from monkeying with the gun and how many were from ammo but I doubt he could go 50 rounds without a hitch. He is using a Springfield with a compensated barrel now.

thank Iggy...The only thing bad I have heard is slide steel is softer than most. I don't know if that is true or not. I am not a metallurgist nor would I understand the hardness rating if I heard them.

Best value in a 1911 - BAR NONE!
I sold a Kimber Custom CDP II to get mine. I'd owned the Kimber a year and found the DW CBOB for sale and jumped on it!
The CBOB is a 70 series too!

The price is less than what I have seen them for here, by a 100 or so. Dan Wesson is poised to become the next top 1911 production builder IMO. They are doing things right. No MIM parts, all quality parts and a lot of hand fitting. Rumor has it there will soon be a significant price increase, so if the CBOB interests you jump now!
I owned own a couple of years ago and it was a great gun. It prompted me into buying an Ed Brown Kobra Carry. Although I got a desirable Winchester 92 for it....I wish I hadn't traded it away.

Dan Wessons----Thumbs up......mostly......
I own two at this time. I have a C-Bob in 10MM that is Spectacular!! It has been massaged as I run it hard and fast. I have a 10MM Match Patriot that is for sale on the forum only because I'm out of work and need money. I've shot a few others and have had no complaints. My "Mostly" comment is in reference to the barrel being supported enough to run 10MM's on the hot side. Some are sketchy as the tolerances change due to machinery-wear and lack of attention. I would recommend a Dan Wesson/CZ..............,And I own a few "higher-end" 1911's. Bottom line is John Moses Browning--( All face South and bow!!)--would be proud of their product if he were here today!! IMO Sprefix

George, I can recommend the CBob completely. The gun is stunning and by far the best bang for your buck. Mine has performed flawlessy through around 1200 rounds so far. No problems at all.
When you shake the gun, it makes no sound. When you eye up the rear fit of the slide to the frame, it looks like a hairline. The dual colored Novak Night Sights (two green dots in the rear and yellow one up front) are the best I've ever used. My trigger pull broke intially broke at 4 pounds 2 ounces when it was new. It's now just under 4 pounds. Very little take up, a crisp let off, and zero overtravel. Perfect for a combat carry pistol.
The "feel" of the Bobtail and the Commander size is perfect to my subjective hands. I liked the Bobtail so much that I had my Colt Combat Elite converted with Ed Brown parts to match my Dan Wesson. After shooting the CBob, my Colt just didn't feel good anymore. The Bobtail feels amazingly terrific!
The grips are the most handsome I've ever seen too.
Get one while you can at a decent price!
-Steve

so what would 'decent price' be? All that I've seen are in the ~$1100+ zone

That is a great price, I recently paid $1025. Steve sums it up nicely, fit and finish, sites, grips, etc. are excellent plus it's a great shooter. I can't comment on the carry aspect as I have yet do so, still looking for a belt holster that won't break the bank. This is a great pistol

Well, the OP saw one for $910, which is great, but considering what you are getting, $1100 is pretty decent too. They are well worth it when you figure in all the custom features. Plus, DW will be raising prices substantially next year. A bobtail might cost you $1300-$1400 then.

I guess the conscious is the bob-tail is ok. I t has just about come down to that or a Para LDA of which I know nothing about except I like the LDA on the small 45 par 6+1 very slim and you don't have to darry it in condition one and it is slim..Any more advice is welcome. I have been a SW and Colt person for 40+ years just seem strange to wonder off the path. But even old dogs can learn new tricks, I hope. the Para would be easier for CCW but the prices are close to even, give or take a hundred. Keep the advice coming.....Thanks

OK? They're.........
The Dan Wesson might be close in price to a Para Ord, but they are miles apart in quality.

I can not speak for the Bobtail Commander but can for the Pointman 7 which was probably one of my best gun purchases ever. I picked it up "used" but do not think in had 50 rounds through it. The trigger is outstanding and one of the most accurate guns I have. They make a fine product and any association with CZ is also good as there products are also excellent. I do not think you will be disappointed.
I took the wood grips off and put these Pacs on which help with my sweaty hands.
There was this thread that I guess means that they might stop making them or selling them or increasing the price or all or nothing??
FYI Dan Wesson changes for 2010, better look...

BUY IT!
You'll love it. I do mine. I've owned several other 1911's by different manufacturers and this is the best. Excellent gun for the money. The price is great too. If you want it, buy it. I hear that CZ/Dan Wesson will be raising the price on thier entire line of 1911's.

I've used the 1911 in the army and really love my DW 1911. Every army 1911 I've ever used rattled when ever it was handled. My DW 1911 was so tight that after I first shot it when I went to clean it the slide stuck open and I thought I broke it. The folks at the gun store I bought it from got a good laugh when I brought it in for them to look at.

The $910 price tag quoted by the OP was three years ago. Wonder what they cost today?

I have about 7 1911s, some are custom jobs.
by far out of the box, nothing can compare to my DW CCO which I carry plain clothes on duty.
it was the best $1200 I have ever spent. The gun was actually 1300 at Jet Guns and I used a credit card which gave me a 100$ off the purchase and 18 month no finance.
I wish I had an extra $1700 laying around to get a black Valor.
I actually had to increase trigger weight, it was too light for duty carry. my only issue with this entire package is I would prefer checkering over the chain link. shooting duty hollow points, I can feel the gun shift in my hand.
very accurate and tight fitting. I thought the slide stop lever and thumb safety were to wide for this style of gun so I changed to suit my style.
I did make a few changes. I dehorned and thinned the slide stop a bit and added a Colt thumb safety.

I caught it when I read "Rumor has it there will soon be a significant price increase."
DW 1911s used to be a bang for buck on the order of today's RIA models.
No more. The secret is out. DW makes/made some of the most beautiful 1911s going.
I'm guessing the older DW 70 type have also dropped off the Kalifornistan "approved" roster as well.

Several years ago, I was at my local indoor range and I noticed two stainless steel .45 1911s in their showcase. One was a Colt Officers marked $900 and the other was the above Dan Wesson (pre CZ) marked $450. At that time, I did not even know that Dan Wesson made anything other than revolvers and both the range owner and I had no idea of where Dan Wesson 1911s rated on the quality scale. I did not want to spend $450 plus tax for a possible dud so I handed the gun back to him. He said "what about $400 out the door?" and I figured why not.
The gun has performed great. It is a "Patriot" model and has an Officers size frame and a Commander length slide.
I would not sell mine even if I was offered $450 for it.

I picked up a 2009 in 10mm and Commander size for $1K a couple years ago. The fit and finish is nice. The night sights are sort of "so what" to me. I would shoot the bobbed grip before you buy if you can. Oh yes, the picture.
