Default laws on mailing a 1871 rifle

i understand that the post office will allow a antique rifle be sent by us mail. my other question is does it has to be mail to a ffl holder or can it be sent direct to a privat owner

Federal law allows mailing antiques, made before Jan 1, 1899. These are not considered firearms. This includes rifles, shotguns, and handguns.

Local laws must be obeyed too.

I've recently received a couple of Nepal Cache Martini Henry rifles through UPS. I have received antique pre-1898 handguns in the mail in the past before. I can have antique and blackpowder guns shipped straight to my front door.

"Modern guns' go to my favorite FFL for me to come get and do the paperwork.

Black powder guns of new manufacture the same in my state. I could order a BP rifle or pistol from Cabela's...and ship it straight to me.

No, no FFL needed for antique arms that qualify. Better check out the make, model and serial number just to be sure the gun qualifys as an antique with the ATF. Also better check state and local laws, however in central Oklahoma...it ain't a problem.

I do think certain states(NY, maybe NJ and others), plus certain citys(Chicago)) have laws against BP handguns and possibly longarms too.

Glad to be an Okie!
