Marlin Model 39A "Mountie" carbine, project rifle (pics)
A friend of mine is liquidating a life long collection of long guns, today I bought from him a 1955 vintage Marlin 39A "Mountie" carbine, with straight stock, carbine length barrel, etc. It needs some work, so I'll be on the phone with Marlin on Monday to see if I can get a magazine tube, one front barrel band screw, and a butt plate. It has a butt plate on it, just not a Marlin one. It is rough looking, has some pitting on the barrel, quite a lot of finish loss on the reciever, but it doe's fire, extract and eject shells, both .22 short and Long Rifle. I got it cheap, so it should make a good field gun when I'm done with it. Here's some pics:
If I have a hard time finding a magazine tube (carbine length), someone on the forum mentioned not long ago they knew someone who made .22 magazine tubes. Anyone have that guy's contact info?

You should be able to get everything you need...Marlin will not work on guns 50 years old or older...otherwise, you could have sent it in for an overhaul...but it sounds like you can do it yourself...great project.

Great little rifles and a worthy restoration project. I like the early 39A Mountie version with the rounded lever. I have both that one and the 39M.

Neat gun and a nice project. I never thought about Marlin's too much until I picked up a minty 1952 production 39A earlier this year. I'd like to have a similar condition/vintage Mountie to go with it.

I have a 39a ser#k218x with a pistol grip stock and is not Microgroove rifled I wonder what year it was made, I think the microgroove started about 1953. You have a very nice rifle. Jeff

T. Mcintire,
Those are some awesome pictures!
I can't wait to get the magazine tube for it so I can shoot it. I shot it yesterday by using the magazine tube from my full size Model 39, it shoots good. It did look funny with four inches of magazine tube sticking out in front of the muzzle! Fired ten rounds of Long Rifle and ten rounds of shorts, functions flawless.
Hopefully, Marlin will have one, if they don't I'll try Numrich.

If you can't find a mountie length mag tube, but can locate a 39A tube, just use the 39A tube and cut it back to the correct length from the muzzle end. The knurled cap comes out when the cross pin is punched out (as does the spring and follower). Cut, reinstall the cap and redrill for the pin. The pin is just a friction fit in place.
Brownells lists a 39A inner mag tube assembly, around $25.
I don't recall if there were any changes along the way that would prohibit a later mfg tube from working in an earlier gun though.
Nice carbine,,nice project!

In the 1960's I bought a new Golden Mountie 39A via mail order from Kliens in Chicago. Total $68.00 shipped.

2152,
Thanks for the tip. If I can't find a Mountie length mag tube tomorrow, I'll get a full size one.

I have had good luck getting Marlin parts from Wisner's. They make several hard to find parts.

I have shot many 22s, and of all these that I have shot and owned the Marlin Model 39A "mountie" is the best! Extremely accurate, very smooth, silky action, and very comfortable to handle! The last one I owned was stolen! I have one that I am sving up for that is in really good condition for $550! With a thumb hammer attachment and nice scope I'll be back in business!!!

Just thought I would throw in a little history. A few in here have been calling the Mountie a carbine which it is not. It is a short rifle. Marlin did produce a carbine model for a couple years back about 40 years ago. The barrel marking actually called it a model 39 carbine instead of a model 39 Mountie.

What would be the difference between a carbine and a short rifle?
