Default 1892 Winchester takedown .44 with cattle brand in the stock

This 1909 44-40 has all kinds of custom features that I mentioned here before. But it also has a cattle brand in the stock done with what looks like a hot wire. This gun was used a lot on some ranch. Anyone here know how to check out old brands and find their history and location?

I'd imagine brands would have to be registered with the local government, state or at least county to be enforceable as proof of ownership of livestock.

Wyatt: What do you 'read' that brand to be? I read it as; "Lazy 7 J". Anyone else? Also, which state did this branded rifle come from? ........ Big Cholla

"J" something. Beats me really. My dad traded a Luger for it in the 50's. This was in Oakland, Ca.. I of course assumed it was a California brand but it could be Nevada or wherever. I looked into it a little once but thought I 'd bring it up here because there's a wide range of knowledge on this forum.

Wyatt
Out here in the wild west, every state has a State Brand Inspector. You might look him up in the Gov. section of a phone book.
A lot of brands come and go and they may be the same in several states. Could also be stylized artwork that some cowboy put on his rifle.
Good looking shooter.

I think it has a steel 'shotgun' butt plate too...
That one needs a letter!

Yes, a steel butt plate. This shotgun butt is so much better IMO than a crescent butt. It just feels perfect to hold and shoot. Crescents look cooler to me, though. Here's the other special order features. Take-down, round barrel, tang sight, folding rear sight on barrel, and of course pistol grip with Win. cap.

Alpo: You are right of course, but the old timers weren't hung up on exactness.......... But just maybe this brand is "Lazy 7 Fishhook"? I was taught to read brands from left to right and top to bottom.

I looked at the California State Brand book on-line, but didn't find any registered brand close. Must remember that there are 'cattle' brands and 'horse' brands registered as separate entities. .. Big Cholla
