Default Shooting pennies with a Savage Model 5 target rifle (pics)

Still practicing with my new camera, so bear with me while I try some closeups....

Took my Pre-WW2 Savage Model 5 target trilfe to the range this morning, getting some practice in the shooting postions, prone, sitting and off hand. This rifle is super accurate, prone groups at 25 yards are all rounds touching, and the Lyman sight makes it easy to adjust that group into the "X" and 10 ring. This is the rifle I got a couple weeks ago at a gun show for $115:

Found a couple pennys lying around, so tried my hand at shooting them from the prone position at 25 yards. Found it wasn't hard to hit them, finding them after you hit them is the problem. Taped to the target board, they either fly off to somewhere unknown, or are pushed through the target board and wind up in the dirt berm somewhere.

So, I taped one to a piece of plastic bucket, blackened the tape where the penny was, then took a shot. Result, one holed penny:

Ammo used, cheap Mexican "Centurian", I understand it is made in Mexico under license by Eley. It is very accurate, and cheap at $22.50 a brick, $2.25 a box:

I think there is some federal regulations about destroying money...
I've always drilled a small hole and hung them by paper clips. They are a challenge at 50 yards.

I believe it is a Federal offense to "deface" money but not to destroy it. Think of those machines where you have a penny crushed into some sort of souvenir thing... the penny is effectively destroyed, not defaced.

I figured it would be at least as accurate as my Savage Mod3 is,,and more with that Lyman recvr site on it! Nice shootin'!
They made some really great barrels at Savage in the pre war years.

$115,,whats not to like about that rifle..

Savage rifles are very underrated for what they are. They are some of the most accurate out of the box rifles there are.

Old pre-war rifles have a character all their own.

How is that Centurion .22 ammo? I've used the 12ga ammo and it some good stuff.

K.38,

I like the Centurion .22 ammo, it gives accuracy equal to or better than target brands such as Wolf and Eley. There is a small shop near our range that sells it for $22.95 a brick, $2.29 a box, about as cheap as you can get. All of my rifles like it, as does my Ruger .22/45 pistol.

The only guns I own I can't use it in is my K.22 revolvers, it gives extremely sticky extraction in them.

Kep trying-I'm sure you'll soon be able to hit the penny in the center. Then come back and show us...................

I introduced my son to shooting at a coin. Unfortunately, he hit it, and I have yet to find it.

He was more disappointed than impressed with his shot. It's like having no pictures!

Nice rifle.

Cajunlawyer,

Yes, it does look like I'll have to work on my trigger control a little more, might have jerked the trigger a bit...

Fortunately, targets aren't expensive, literally pennies apiece!

I can recall shooting pennies glued to the center of targets at about 25 yards when I was a pre-teen with my Winchester Model 69A bolt action, using open sights. I remember drilling one right through the center, and I was so proud of it, I mailed it to my great uncle in Kentucky. He was the brother of my paternal grandfather, who died when I was only three years old, so he doubled in brass as my substitute grand-dad. He wrote back that he was impressed. I couldn't have been prouder!

LOL at least you hit those damn coins. I see pictures all the time on various gun forums where guys show off how great their guns shoot, but none of them ever hit the dime or quarter that's on the target next to that itty bitty group!
