What's the story on that mount? It reminds me of this more familiar setup. Never seen it on a bolt action.

Stith Mount..the original 'no drill' mount.
Install it yourself, no gunsmith needed,,was the ad.
Available for just about any rifle with available front and rear sight dovetail(s) and/or factory drilled & tapped holes to mount it into.
Alot of the early ones are for 3/4" dia scopes popular back then.
There was another similar constructed mount system ,, can't remember the name of it.
Great looking classic Winchester & Savage.

2152 hit it on the head...it is a Stith mount. I wanted to scope this gun, but didnt want any extra holes. I was reading the "Rifle in America" by Sharpe and ran across his description of this mount. I ebayed it and found this one.

Nice!
You're a good friend! Stith mounts and Lyman Alaskan scopes can be quite valuable, plus they‘re really cool mounted low over the bore. There’s more than a couple Savage 99/Alaskan/Stith combos at my deer camp, but some of those guys are really old (one’s over 90).
My brother-in-law was with me at recent show where I picked up a lovely Alaskan with the steel Stith mount for a Savage 99. He immediately started to drool on it and since he has a Savage 99 and I don’t (yet), I let him have it for what I stole it for ($100). I planned on selling the scope and mount on ebay at a tidy profit, but at least it has a good home. I guess you’re a better friend than I am a BIL.
Here’s a later Stith mount/Kollmorgen scope on a Model 70.

I still have some of the Stith mounts in 3/4". I would love to find a Lyman Alaskan at a decent price to put on this gun as it would be more correct for the period. Alas, everyone attributes the Alaskan to WW2 sniper rifles and think they are worth their weight in gold.

I think the Lyman Alaskan is 7/8",,,maybe not,,but a Leupold Alaskan I have is 7/8 and is suposed to be the same as a Lyman.
The early Weaver 330's, 29S, etc were 3/4". The Weaver was used on the '03A3 IIRC,,forget what the military designation was.
I agree the Alaskan scopes are one of the best looking for the classic rifles. Just the right size. The Leupolds were made in the late 60's or 70's I think. A Lyman Alaskan duplicate, typical Leupold quality. But the folks wanting the scope to absolutely match the era of the rifle and mounts opt for a Lyman. Getting pricey and hard to find in nice condition. What isn't!
