Default Scope For .22 Rifle (?)

I bought a scope for my .22 rifle, my first rifle scope - a Nikon 4X... I found it difficult to acquire the target through that small hole, and I could not see the target well beyond 35 yards., so I sold it. I managed to scrape enough money to buy an expensive EOTech red dot (Mod 512.A65)... I really couldn't afford it, but bought it any way. I liked it, great for fast target acquisition, at limited distaces... again, I could not see where my shots were going at distances beyond 35 yards. I need a scope that permits me to see the target well enough at 50-100 yards and more; since I am not a hunter, fast acquisition is not important. Can any one lead me in the right direction to find the scope I need...and maybe I can find some one to trade my As New In The Box EOTech for a good quality scope? Thanks.

Pete

Get a Tasco World Class scope. The optics are great and the price is reasonable. On that .22 it will hold a zero without problems.

It's a sleeper of a scope and folks are starting to catch on... I've had a few and always been satisfied with them.

Take a look at Mueller scopes, They are very well regarded over at rimfire central. Also, a few of the guys at my local club them on their .22s. I was very impressed with them for the money.

I have had good luck with 1" scopes on 22RFs. I used a Simmons 3x9 that I bought years ago for $19.95 and it was fine for a 22. Now I have an old 2x7 Redfield that I use - you can pick them up cheap at gunshows.

I recently mounted a Sightron 3x9 Rimfire on top of my Ruger 77/22 and I've been very happy with it. It does have a fine crosshair which I personally like. Price was about $135.00.

Mueller is good so is Tasco. Just bought a Marlin 22 Model 60 for my granddaughter. It has a 2x7 Tasco on it. Not bad optics at all. I had a Lyman Alaskan on my .308 for years. Sold the Lyman for more than I had in my Mod.88 Win.

I've heard good things about the Mueller AO scope.
Myself, I have a few cheapies that seem good enough for non
critical .22 use.. A 3x9x32 Simmons, a 3x9x40 Tasco, and a
4x32 BSA. I don't like the BSA. It's got dull looking optics compared to
the first two, which seem about equal. I have the Simmons on it right
now. It's much brighter than the BSA.

My son has a Simmons 3X9 on his .22, I'm using a Burris compact 3X9 on mine. Both of us are very satisfied.

Pete, you might think about a magnifier for that EOtech. That way you keep the great vision/field of view of the EOtech.

The ones from EOtech are pricey...found this. HTH, Preston

I just put a Tasco 3x9x40 scope on a Remington 597 that I recently picked up at a pawn shop. It is an older Tiawan made one that I had in my closet. If I were looking for a scope for a .22 I would just attend the next gun show and shop the tables. You should be able to pickup a servicable scope for well under $50.00.

If you want to be able to see bullet holes in targets at 100 yards you will need at least 12X, if not up to 20X. There are two things to consider, magnification and optical quality. A rule of thumb I have heard for years, is the cost of the scope should be nearly equal to the cost of the rifle.

I've used Tasco, Simmons, Burris, Leupold, Nikon, Redfield, Bushnell, and Unertle and a few others over the years, and there is a "difference". Usually fixed power scopes are a "little" better optically than variables, but the advantages of variables usually outweigh this.

I'd recommend going to a large shop that has most of the brands you are interested in and look through them all at a target the size you expect to be shooting at, at the distance you expect to be shooting at. Start with the lower cost scopes and work up to the more expensive scopes. Determine what power you will be satisfied with, then which optical quality you will be satisfied with.

How frequently you use the rifle can also be a factor. If it is a rifle you use a couple times a year you may not want to spend as much as for one you use every week. My Prairie Dog guns, (that get shot at distances up past 600 yards) are Leupold and Nikon, and 18X and 20X. On an Anschutz sporter I use a few times a year I have a Burris 4-12X. On my Anschutz 1407 Match Rifle I have a 20X Unertle. On my 10-22 I have a Tasco 6-18X.

You might be better served by buying a lesser expensive and lower powered rifle scope, and buying a Spotting Scope. These usually come with up to 45X magnification or more, and there are quite a few that aren't that expensive.

Good luck in your search.
