For the Winchester guys......a superb 1890

I've mentioned off and on about an old friend of mine, Bill, that is slowly selling off his collection. One of his guns I've had my eye one was a beautiful Winchester 1890 in .22 Short. Last summer he told me he thought me might sell it, I told him I would take it and would see him next time I visited my parents, which would be over the Christmas holiday.

Funny how things change, since that time he decided he wasn't quite ready to part with this 1890, but when it was time, it was my gun. Also, since I was diagnosed with colon cancer this fall and would be finishing up my chemo and radiation treatments over the holiday season, my wife and I would not travel to MO, but my parents decided to come here. When Mom asked what was on my Christmas list I jokingly told her to go visit Bill, it would be easy, one stop shopping and she wouldn't even need to leave our small town!

Imagine my surprise when I opened this up Christmas morning! Dad said he asked Bill if he had anything I had my eye one, Bill told him yes, but he wasn't sure he wanted to sell, but somehow Dad convinced him to go ahead and part with it. The pics just don't do it justice, with the exception of the blue flaking on the left side of the receiver, this things is easily 95% bright blue, all original unmolested. Easily one of the better 1890's I've seen and certainly better than any of the others in my collection; it is 1926 manufacture and the bore is absolutely mint. Any of y'all that fool with '90's know most have seen years of hard use, this one hasn't.

That is one nice rifle! I too have been bitten by the Winchester bug, and have an 1890 in .22 short on layaway that I will pick up January 1st, after I get my retirement check. It looks as nice as yours, but unfortunately, the bore is pretty bad. I have low expectations for accuracy on that one.

Sir, you are correct in that there very few Model 90's in that condition still around. Congratulations on the extremely nice Christmas Gift. Also, good luck with the colon problem, I had several inches of mine removed in 2006.

Very nice condition. I have one that my grandfather used to shoot rabbits when he was young...he passed away about 25 years ago. It is a good shooter, in good condition, but not perfect. It shoots the .22 WRF. Later, B

I have a story about an old family friend and his Winchester M/64 .30-30 deer rifle, thirty five years ago I was a student in gunsmithing school and one Christmas my parents and I were visiting neighbors of the old gent. He mentioned that he would like to meet me and that he had something I might be interested in. When I went to visit the ole gentleman he had a really nice two volume set of Howe's "The Modern Gunsmith" that he wanted me to have. While visiting with him in his library, I noticed the M/64 hanging in a gun rack. It had been his deer rifle and we admired it and he told me that he wanted to get it appraised before agreeing to selling it. I didn't give the matter much thought after that, thinking the appriasal was his way of telling me he wasen't ready to sell the old gun. About a year or so later out of the blue I get a phone call from my Mom, she said the old man had called and told her he would sell me his rifle. His asking price was $50.00, I told Mom to send my Dad over with $50.00 just as soon as possible. While not the highest condition rifle in my collection, it's one that I value very highly because of the story behind how I came to own it.

What a nice clean example and a timely post. Just like Canoe I have an 1890 in 22 Short in layaway. The serial number is 547512 and should have been shipped around 1915. It's not as nice as yours though.

The bore may not be as bad as it looks. I had one in .22 short from the gallery at the Seaside Heights boardwalk. The gallery loads were sort of a chipboard composition that went around 1600 fps and buitl up in the bore. Cleaned up nicely. Traded that off half a lifetime ago. Joe

That's a pretty one is a hard to find caliber. Mine was one of those rode hard and put away wet rifles.

I am admiring your new plinker as I type this. I have a 62-A that is probably my favorite gun that I own. I traded it from my Dad. He got it in Colorado. I've put lots of meals on the table with it. It digests anything I put in it. I wish you the same joy or more with your new plinker. Sprefix

Thanks, Sam. Yep, this colon cancer isn't much fun, but the doctors assure me they can get it.

I just got off the phone with my friend Bill, the fellow Dad bought the 1890 from, I told him the worst thing about me having an 1890 this nice is it make the rest of my '90's look bad!

I bought my first 1890 about 16-17 years ago, a .22 WRF, from an older guy in Wyoming. He told me has grandfather bought the gun new, it is a 1924 production gun and while a pretty decent 1890, shows years of use, I often wonder how many meals that little rifle put on the table during lean times.
